The Extended Recovery Unit Nurse provides safe, high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and procedural interventions. This role is responsible for comprehensive postoperative assessment, continuous monitoring, pain management, medication administration, and coordination of care from Phase II recovery through discharge or transfer to inpatient units. The Extended Recovery Nurse collaborates with anesthesia providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to identify changes in patient condition, implement timely interventions, and ensure safe patient transitions. The nurse delivers care in accordance with established clinical standards, promotes patient safety, and provides education to patients and caregivers to support optimal recovery outcomes. Manages care of patients with complex devices; utilizes less‑invasive life‑support modalities (e.g., BiPAP, ETCO₂); facilitates safe patient transitions and discharges; collaborates with interdisciplinary teams; communicates changes in patient condition to the anesthesia provider and other necessary ancillary support teams; provides patient and caregiver education and validates understanding of instructions; and adheres to all safety, fire prevention, and organizational policies.
