Advanced Practice Provider, CV Surgery (PRN)

Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in Cardiovascular Surgery plays an integral role in the comprehensive care of adult cardiothoracic surgical patients. This provider works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality perioperative care. Responsibilities include inpatient rounding, first assisting in the operating room, managing pre‑ and postoperative patients, and participating in call coverage.

 

Overview: 

  • Serve as first assist in cardiovascular surgical procedures, including CABG, valve surgery, aortic procedures, and other cardiothoracic operations.
  • Perform surgical tasks such as vein harvesting, suturing, retraction, cannulation assistance, and hemostasis.
  • Support preoperative preparation and postoperative handoff to ICU teams.
  • Perform daily rounds on postoperative and step‑down patients.
  • Manage routine and complex postoperative issues, including hemodynamic monitoring, chest tube management, wound care, and medication adjustments.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, imaging, and consults.
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing, case management, rehabilitation, and other specialties.
  • Participate in shared call rotation and support OR call needs.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Licensed to provide either advanced practice nursing services in the State of Illinois as issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in accordance with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act OR physician assistant services as issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in accordance with the Illinois Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987
  • Licensed by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and State of Illinois for prescribing of narcotics
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications
  • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP)
  • 2+ years of cardiothoracic or critical care experience preferred
  • Excellent clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hospital environment while maintaining patient-centered focus

Advanced Practice Provider - Inpatient Hematology/Oncology - Full - Time, Nights

Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider for Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Night Advanced Practice Provider Team. Sign on Bonus Up to $10,000.00 and Relocation Package Available As an Advanced Practice Provider, you are responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management in the hospital setting, you will play a critical role in delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care to critically ill patients in a fast-paced academic medical center environment. The night shift Advanced Practice Provider covers three inpatient services: Inpatient Leukemia, Inpatient Cellular Therapy, and Inpatient Chemotherapy . These services are all APP-staffed services which each have the support of a Hematology/Oncology Fellow and Hematology/Oncology Attending. After an orientation period on both days and nights, the APP will work independently and autonomously on the Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Night APP Team. At night, the APP will be responsible for managing established inpatients and admitting patients appropriate for the services. The APP will be trained to manage oncologic emergencies such as neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, and cytokine release syndrome. The APP will always have the fellow and attending as resources, although they will not be in house at night. Optimal staffing at night is 2-3 APPs covering all three services per night. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. APP Job Summary: The Nurse practitioner/physician assistant is an APP responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management. The APP manages a caseload of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments.
