Position Overview

United Health Services (UHS) is actively seeking a skilled and dedicated OR Surgical Technologist to join our dynamic surgical team. In this vital role, you will play a crucial part in delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care within our fast-paced operating room environment.

As an OR Surgical Technologist, you will be responsible for preparing operating rooms, meticulously ensuring all surgical instruments are sterile and readily available, and providing essential assistance to surgeons and nurses throughout various procedures. Your contributions directly support optimal patient outcomes and the smooth operation of the surgical suite.

We are pleased to confirm that Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply for this position.

$25.27 - $37.90 per hour, depending on experience

Job Responsibilities:

  • Follows Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique.
  • Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively.
  • Assists the surgeon when needed gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and other related items during the procedure. Anticipates the surgeon’s need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
  • Maintains an organized operative field at all times by keeping the instruments clean and in their proper place.
  • Keeps an accurate sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument count.
  • Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards and identifies conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case.
  • Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient, identifying potential hazards to the surgeon, RN and assisting RN circulator in preoperative checks of equipment.
  • Displays knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemical, or gases) within the Operating Room.
  • Utilizes experienced OR staff as a resource, and acts as a resource for new OR personnel.
  • Assists in suturing, retracting, suctioning under direction of the surgeon.
  • Handles and identifies specimens per policy.
  • Expedites the effective and efficient turn-over of the OR between cases.
  • Takes rotating call duty.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Required

  • Meets the NYS Surgical Technologist Certification Law; OR Completed a Surgical Technologist program in the Armed Forces; OR Completed a nationally accredited educational program for Surgical Technologist with a nationally accredited Surgical Technologist credential OR graduated an accredited school of Practical Nursing and has an active NY state LPN license.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • CPR Certification within 3 months of hire

Preferred

  • Previous Operating Room experience
  • Previous Surgical Technologist experience

Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification. Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Assist with draping the sterile field. Report and/or correct any break in sterile technique. Prepare and edit surgeon's preference lists to assure quality care of the surgical patient. Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes. Assure that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use. Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator. Assist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed. Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions. Keep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments. Assure that all instrumentation is returned to decontamination with proper documentation count sheets.
