OrthoIndy Hospital Northwest, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, provides outpatient care and inpatient care, with 10 operating rooms, 2 procedure rooms and a 42-bed inpatient unit for patients undergoing more invasive procedures, such as disc replacement, spinal fusion or total hip and knee joint replacement.   Other services include an urgent care, clinics, pre-op clinic, imaging and physical therapy. 

General Statement of Duties: 

The Registered Nurse PPOP PACU provides nursing care and service during the preoperative and postoperative periods, integrating and making nursing judgments pertaining to the patient’s condition on a routine and emergency basis. The position oversees the supervision of all non-licensed personnel, while also receiving direction from Physicians.

Essential Duties:

  1. Monitors and assesses patient condition and reports any unusual symptoms, occurrences or discrepancies to manager and appropriate Physicians.
  2. Completes treatments and procedures as ordered and assigned by the Physician, consistent with patient complexity and commensurate with the skill, knowledge, and training of the individual.
  3. Provides care safely, with adequate quality, quantity, and timeliness and according to applicable standards.
  4. Admits patients to all areas within pre and post-operative and post-anesthesia services, and receives and reviews pre post-operative report.
  5. Sets-up, operates and monitors the use of various systems, equipment and instrumentation required for the care of patients.
  6. Reviews and initiates Physician’s orders, administers medication, parenteral fluids and treatment as needed.
  7. Provides instruction, information, and counseling to patients and their families as needed. Distributes educational material as appropriate.
  8. Maintains medication and nursing documentation within the patient record.
  9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and development levels of patients served.

Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred from a nationally accredited nursing program
  • 2-4 years of PACU, ICU and/or ER RN experience is required; 4-6 years of experience preferred.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana required
  • BLS, ACLS certification required; PALS preferred

Job Summary Provides quality patient care to critically ill patients, through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation. Serves as a patient advocate at all times. Supervises the nursing care provided to each patient by other caregivers. Develops the plan for nursing care as a result of coordination with the patient, family and staff of other disciplines as necessary. Applies critical thinking in order to promote positive clinical outcomes. Ensures patient education. Participates in discharge planning. Essential Functions Maintains the standard of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and the nursing department. Assesses the patient on admission within the required time frame. Makes referral to other disciplines based on the assessment, such as rehabilitation and nutritional services. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient change in condition such as Cardiac rhythm, respiratory distress, GI bleed, pulmonary emboli/ edema, diabetic Ketoacidosis, adverse drug reaction and Blood transfusion reaction, etc. Institutes emergency action, notifies physician, obtains orders, etc. Completes and documents patient admission assessment and reassessments as required according to policy. Reports pertinent observations and reaction regarding patients to the appropriate person (i.e., physician, supervisor, charge nurse) and records these observations accurately. Administers medications with verbalized knowledge of the action, side effects, correct dosages and route according ICU policies and procedures. Demonstrates ability to recognize and Institute arrhythmia protocol for the following Cardiac rhythms V-tach, V-fib, PVC’s, asystole, 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree heart block, atrial fibrillation, and atrial flutter. Administers medications utilizing the seven “rights” of medication administration: right patient, route, time, medication, dose, reason and documentation. Validates telemetry strips every 4 hours and PRN. Documents appropriately. Participates in assessing and meeting patient and family education needs. Provides complete patient report to oncoming RN, ensures documentation is complete, physician orders are signed off, and patient rooms are in order.
