Key Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and evaluate specialized care for patients requiring wound, ostomy, and continence management
- Provide care across inpatient and ambulatory settings
- Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based, cost-effective care
- Perform and support advanced wound care techniques including:
- Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT)
- Conservative sharp debridement
- Compression therapy and offloading techniques
- Use of specialty support surfaces and orthotics
- Educate patients, families, and staff on wound care management and prevention strategies
- Develop and implement individualized care plans and make clinical recommendations to providers
- Train and mentor nursing and therapy staff in wound and ostomy care best practices
- Support quality improvement initiatives and promote clinical excellence
- Plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care to inpatient and ambulatory
patients in treatment of wound care. - Collaborates with the primary care provider, surgeons, and other professional
health care providers, in one or more surgical services, to assess, coordinate, plan, and implement the newest approaches and practices to deliver efficient, cost-effective wound care for the patient population. - Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates nursing activities and services that
relate to wound care and enterostomal therapy. - Incorporates teaching and learning activities into care plan
- Makes recommendations to the physician for changes in wound/ostomy care
orders/patient care plans, and provides evidence-based research support, as
needed, in collaboration with a licensed independent provider. - Through training and support, empowers clinical staff to effectively assess
patients, as related to wounds, ostomies, and incontinence; recommend
appropriate protocols and advocate with physicians. - Provides basic wound/ostomy care training and orientation to all new nursing
and therapy staff - Knowledge of, and skill in, the management of complex, delicate machinery
and life-saving equipment, and wound care specific equipment, used for
ultrasonic treatment, conservative sharps debridement, adaptive/off-loading
orthotics (contact casts/ shoes/ boots, specialty support surfaces, negative
(sub-atmospheric) pressure wound therapy, compression therapy/units and
obtaining an arterial/brachial index.
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Must be a U.S Citizen
- Must hold current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for
Healthcare Provider, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric
Advanced Life Support (PALS). - Graduate of an accredited WOCN education program (WOCNEP)
- Current WOCN certification (WOCNCB required)
- Minimum 2 years of recent WOC RN experience (within the last 4 years)
- Strong clinical knowledge of advanced wound care equipment and techniques
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
