Overview of Position:

Provides professional nursing care through appropriate medical triage and education via the telephone to address customer’s health concerns. Works independently with minimal supervision. Manages bed requests for admissions and transfers expediently to assure proper placement based on patient care needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.    Uses symptoms-based protocols to assess significant data in order to evaluate and classify the urgency of symptoms and advise patients on options for referral and/or intervention at the time of call.
2.    Provides patient teaching or facilitates its occurrence through referral or health information resources discussed to insure patient knowledge.
3.    Conduct outbound calls to follow up on patient compliance with the recommended plan in order to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
4.    Demonstrates the knowledge, skill and ability to schedule after hours procedures for departments and also notify the appropriate staff when emergencies occur.
5.    Manages all bed requests, balancing supply and demand, appropriate patient placement based on care requirements, expedites admissions and discharges, reduces internal transfers and reduces barriers to unnecessary delays.
6.    Manages all interfacility transfer calls by facilitating transfer once medical acceptance is established.
7.    Documents all telephone inquiries in the telephonic nursing computer system at the time of the call.
8.    Performs other functions as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.    Current Ohio RN License and ADN diploma or BSN.
2.    Minimum of four (4) years RN nursing experience.
3.    Current CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
4.    Excellent verbal and non-verbal communications skills with a pleasant telephone voice to facilitate telephone-nursing intervention.
5.    Ability to read, write and explain or describe moderately complex information to enhance customer’s understanding.
6.    Ability to use the nursing process for problem solving of customers health questions/concerns.
7.    Excellent interpersonal, decision-making, facilitation, conflict resolution and investigative skills.
8.    Ability to provide outstanding customer service and maintain a high degree of confidentiality. 
9.    Ability to work independently and under pressure in a complex and changing working environment.
10.    Excellent computer skills and knowledge of computer software, including programs such as Word, Excel, etc. 
11.    Demonstrate excellence in typing skills, to include word processing.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.    Works in an office environment.
2.    Employee has requirements to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with the hands and arms.   Answers telephone calls, uses personal computer and other business machines extensively, which requires the ability to apply finger dexterity.  Individual bends, reaches, pushes and pulls file drawers to file records and reports. 
3.    Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
4.    Vision abilities required include up close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
5.    May be required to periodically rotate shifts and regular days off.  All system employees must be willing to work all shifts, extra hours, holidays and emergency shifts as required.
