Clinic Registered Nurse - Premier Express Care at Ligonier - Casual

Job Responsibilities:

                      Clinical Duties      

  • Greets patients and escorts them to the examination and/or procedure rooms.
  • Prepares patient for examination, obtaining and recording vital signs, weight, chief complaint and any other pertinent information using appropriate techniques specific to the ages served and; accurately transcribe results in patient’s chart.
  • Performs point of care lab testing and patient treatment as ordered by the physician.  Reports and record results accurately in the medical record.  Follows all procedures to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares patients for and assists physicians with all treatments and procedures using appropriate techniques specific to the ages served.
  • Collects specimens following established policies for patient identification and specimen collection and ensures specimen is accurately processed for transportation to the laboratory.
  • Facilitates communication from internal and external sources (telephone, mail, fax, etc.) and takes action appropriately.  Provides advice based on protocol and physician instruction and directs patients to the appropriate level of care.
  • Maintains clean safe environment and replenishes supplies in patient care areas.
  • Provides instruction and education, within their scope of practice, to patients and families, based on the patient’s age, financial, psychosocial, medical and spiritual needs and obtains signed consent forms when required.
  • Administers medications by all routes, using appropriate technique specific to the ages served.
  • Facilitates patient’s access to prescription refills, calling in prescriptions, obtaining prior authorization, assisting with indigent programs, per physician order based on the patient’s financial status or insurance coverage.
  • Notifies physician when patient is ready for examination.
  • Organizes and keeps a running inventory of medications in med rooms and refrigerator (routinely disposing of expired medications as warranted).
  • Assists in completion of forms required by physician prior to examination (e.g., health questionnaires; medical history, etc).
  • Cleans and scrubs down rooms and counter tops nightly and when necessary.
  • Cleans, packages and sterilizes instruments and procedure supplies (forceps, etc.)
  • Tracks all lab results (e.g., calling for cultures, blood type and lab information) and documents and initials results in chart when hard copy is not available as per office protocol.
  • Adheres to OSHA and sterilization guidelines.
  • Reviews charts for next day appointment; checks for pending lab or diagnostic test results at the end of each business day; obtains said results prior to the patient’s scheduled arrival.
  • Initials and files all patient related correspondence within 24 hours of receipt.  Ensures all charts are appropriately filed at the end of each business day.
  • Records services rendered on power form, Medication Administration form (lab, urine, injections, etc.) and checks for accuracy.
  • Completes physician orders for ancillary tests, surgeries or specialist referrals ordered and scheduled as directed.
  • Follows confidentiality and security rules when providing information to outside sources.
  • Directs patient to exit area post procedure.
  • Assists in collection of statistical data as needed for performance improvement or operational requirements.
  • Answers telephone, screens and directs incoming calls and messages to the appropriate party, answers patient inquiries either in person or on the telephone within the limits of his/her knowledge and medical practice polices.
  • Travels to other IPG offices when needed to cover when requested.
  • Performs any other services deemed reasonable by physician or practice manager.

Qualifications:

 Must be BLS certified required (or obtain within one month of hire).  A multi-tasked professional with at least 3 years of experience, preferred.

Knowledge:  Advanced knowledge of medical terminology; first aid; equipment, supplies and instruments used in a medical office; clinical laboratory methods; universal blood and body fluid precautions; OSHA rules and regulations; established protocol for sterilization techniques; established protocol for storing chemicals and gases, restrictions imposed by various managed care carriers, various forms inherent to profession; patient confidentiality regulations.

Abilities.  Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff members; create a responsive caring environment for patients; respond promptly to physician’s directions; maintain medical records in a concise and accurate manner; employ correct aseptic techniques in preparation of instruments & equipment; react quickly in emergency situations; recognize and prevent possible safety hazards; ensure proper maintenance of equipment; communicate clearly and facilitate patient education when warranted; act as advocate and assist physician in meeting the physical and mental needs of patient; exercise independent judgment; perform functions that consistently fall within the legal boundaries of profession.
