A Brief Overview The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a unit that cares for patients with congenital and acquired heart conditions, that largely require surgical and/or medical intervention, some within just hours of being born. The CICU at CHOP is one of the largest in the world and is comprised of a team of highly trained medical providers, nurses, and respiratory therapists dedicated to the healing and well-being of this specialized patient population. State of the art medical technology, such as Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs), ECMO, dialysis, as well as open heart transplants are all readily seen on the CICU.
