Medical Assistant - Wound Center

Position Summary:

Schedules appointments, obtains insurance benefits, authorizations and obtains referrals on some insurances. Assist physician with patient visits for the Wound Center.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for contacting insurance carriers to verify the patient's eligibility and benefits
  • Gathers appropriate information, claim numbers, addresses, etc. for billing purposes
  • Responsible for authorization on some insurance
  • Accurately prepares and enters patient charges via computer
  • Assists in establishing need for charge codes
  • Able to verify input of patient charges
  • Obtains physician orders and consults as needed
  • Performs duties and procedures as directed by supervisor/medical director.
  • Proficient use and maintenance of necessary supplies and equipment required to meet patient, physicians or departments needs
  • Monitors registration errors and communicates them to the Patient Access Supervisor or Manager
  • Maintains census/visit information
  • Assembles charts
  • Obtains and verifies appropriate insurance information, referrals and authorizations
  • Documents necessary information clearly and completely in the computer system
  • Performs miscellaneous office duties including answering phones, filing, photocopying, typing reports, sorting mail and ordering supplies
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested
  • Has the ability to adjust plans and reprioritize to accomplish the normal operations in addition to the unexpected ones

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of accredited school of Medical Assistant, or 1 year of Medical Assistant experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous medical assisting, nurse aide or technical experience
  • Previous clerical experience
  • BLS certification within 3 months of hire

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working with insurance verification
  • Phlebotomy experience/certification
  • Successfully completion of a Hyperbaric medicine course.( Qualified Nurse Aide or Medical Assistant may monitor dives after successful completion of course/and 40 hour orientation; and function only at times in the hyperbaric technician role only when hyperbaric technician is not available)
  • Experience working in a Wound & Hyperbaric Center
