Full-Time School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) 1:1 Support
Location: Tacoma, Washington
Position Overview
- The School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides full-time, one-on-one nursing care for a student in a structured special education classroom. The student requires gastrostomy tube (G-tube) feeding and diabetic care, as well as support within an environment that includes significant behavioral needs. The LPN ensures the students medical safety while supporting participation in academic and social activities.
- This role works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with Washington State nursing regulations, district policies, and individualized healthcare and education plans.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Medical Care (1:1 Student Support)
- Provide continuous, individualized nursing care to an assigned student throughout the school day
- Administer G-tube feedings, medications, and treatments per physician orders
- Monitor and manage diabetes care, including blood glucose checks, insulin administration, and hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia response
- Implement and follow the students Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) and Emergency Care Plan (ECP)
- Monitor vital signs and overall health status; promptly report concerns
Support in Structured Behavioral Classroom
- Provide care within a structured classroom serving students with significant behavioral needs
- Maintain awareness of environmental safety and respond appropriately during behavioral incidents
- Collaborate with staff to ensure the students safety during behavioral escalations
- Support de-escalation efforts by maintaining a calm, consistent presence
- Adapt care delivery while maintaining student dignity and safety
Daily Living & Student Support
- Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), including feeding, hygiene, mobility, and positioning as needed
- Support use of specialized medical equipment
- Ensure safe participation in classroom, transitions, recess, and school activities
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with supervising RN, special education staff, paraeducators, and related service providers
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding health updates
- Participate in team meetings related to healthcare needs and student support planning
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and district policies
- Document all care provided, including G-tube feedings, glucose levels, insulin administration, and incidents
- Follow Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission (NCQAC) standards
Qualifications-
Required
- Active Washington State Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Ability to independently manage complex medical care in a school setting
- Strong clinical assessment and documentation skills
Preferred
- Experience with G-tube feeding and diabetic management
- Experience working with pediatric or school-aged populations
- Experience in special education or behavioral support environments
- Training or familiarity with de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed care
