Position Summary:
Provides professional nursing service by administering anesthesia to surgical patients. Prepares and administers anesthetic to patients to reversibly depress bodily functions, or otherwise desensitize a patient to permit the performance of medical or surgical procedures.
Position Key Accountabilities:
- Prepares and administers anesthetic agents to patients in order to desensitize them to permit the performance of medical or surgical procedures.
- Performs pre-anesthesia evaluation of the patient in order to ascertain physiological and psychological factors which influence the selection of anesthetic agent and the formulation of the plan of anesthetic management.
- Monitors the patient in the operating room in order to maintain the patients in a homeostatic condition and to assure that unnecessary injuries are not inflicted on the patient.
- Records anesthetic information on the anesthesia chart to provide a permanent record necessary for the care of the patient, to provide material for teaching, for study, and to establish a medical-legal record.
- Provides clinical supervision or guidance of nurse anesthesia students, paramedical, and medical students in order to contribute to their clinical training. Responds to emergency situations.
- Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
- Skilled in administration of varied regional anesthesia techniques, i.e., spinal, epidurals, brachial plexus blocks.
- Skilled in the placement of arterial lines, CVP, and PA lines, and is capable in the use and interpretation of varied pressure monitoring and lab values. Active pursuit of continuing education credits.
- Is familiar with the use and interpretation of EKG, arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring.
- Is skilled in respiratory management and blood gas analysis based on therapeutic knowledge.
- Work may involve handling biohazardous, chemical, and radiological materials, as well as operating associated equipment. Required safety training and appropriate engineering and administrative controls including the use of personal protective equipment must be followed.
- Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Nurse Anesthetist (APRN-CRNA) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) by National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
- Clinical specialty certification determined by the department required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) by American Heart Association (AHA) preferred
Minimum Education:
Master's Degree in Nurse Anesthesia requiredMinimum Experience:
Experienced in a major medical center or a major trauma receiving hospital required Experienced in academics, i.e., has worked with nurse anesthesia students, residents, and medical students required Experienced as an R.N. in the critical and acute care areas requiredPhysical Requirements:
