Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing in the administration, management, and oversight of nursing services to ensure the highest quality of resident care. This role is responsible for assisting with the daily clinical operations of the nursing department, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and company regulations, and promoting a culture of compassionate, resident-centered care.

In the absence of the Director of Nursing, the ADON assumes responsibility for nursing department operations and clinical leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Resident Care

  • Coordinate and oversee comprehensive resident care plans in accordance with physician orders, resident needs, facility policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, compassionate nursing care that promotes residents' health, safety, dignity, and quality of life.
  • Participate in admissions assessments and decisions, including prospective resident evaluations as needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, consultants, therapists, community agencies, and interdisciplinary team members to enhance resident outcomes.
  • Assist in coordinating nursing services with all facility departments.

Staff Management & Development

  • Communicate, interpret, and reinforce nursing policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and support to nursing staff.
  • Conduct competency evaluations for licensed, certified, and non-certified nursing personnel.
  • Ensure adequate staffing and nursing coverage to meet resident care needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor clinical quality indicators and implement improvement initiatives to achieve and exceed organizational goals.
  • Coordinate ongoing Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities through rounds, audits, interviews, and record reviews.
  • Prepare reports and summaries for Quality Assurance Committee meetings.
  • Assist with survey preparation and readiness, educating staff on regulatory standards and survey processes.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and company regulations governing long-term care operations.

Infection Prevention & Risk Management

  • Implement and oversee the facility's Infection Prevention and Control Program.
  • Monitor infection surveillance activities, identify trends, and develop corrective action plans.
  • Prepare and present infection control reports to the Quality Assurance Committee.
  • Investigate incidents, complaints, allegations of abuse or neglect, and loss or misappropriation of resident property.
  • Promptly report unusual occurrences in accordance with state and facility requirements.

Operational Oversight

  • Participate in daily and weekly management meetings to discuss resident care, census changes, staffing, concerns, and operational priorities.
  • Monitor facility conditions to ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for residents.
  • Support compliance with 24-hour nursing service requirements, RN coverage regulations, and abuse prevention programs.
  • Promote workplace safety and accident prevention practices to reduce employee injuries and workers' compensation costs.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current and active RN license in the state of practice.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations, nursing practices, infection control, and quality assurance processes.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Five (5) years of experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or acute healthcare settings.
  • Previous experience in nursing management or clinical leadership roles.
