Surgical Tech Full-time

Description

Assembles and organizes all instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for each specific surgical procedure. Assists in instrument handling and procedure techniques as requested by the surgeon. Maintains a sterile field and technique to assure good patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a professional school earning surgical technology degree.
  • Complete Certified Surgical Technology Exam within 1 year of hire.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.
  • Ability and willingness to work with patients’ growth and development needs particularly related to the age of patients in the unit/area(s) of assignment.
  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency as required for the unit/area(s) of assignment.
  • Ability to manage a chaotic work environment.
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement and organizational values (e.g., efficiency & financial responsibility, safety, partnership & service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust & respect).

Position Summary Provides specialized surgical technology support for adult cardiovascular and open-heart patients in an acute care hospital setting. Functions as a member of the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) team during open-heart, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), valve, thoracic, and other cardiovascular procedures. Prepares the operating room, establishes and maintains the sterile field, anticipates the needs of the surgeon, and ensures required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functioning. Performs or assists with vein harvesting, including endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH), consistent with demonstrated competency, hospital policy, and applicable scope of practice. Communicates and collaborates with surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesia providers, perfusionists, and other Open Heart team members. Participates in emergency cases, on-call coverage, room turnover, equipment maintenance, inventory management, performance improvement activities, and orientation/precepting of surgical technologists joining the CVOR team. Qualifications · Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program required. · Minimum two (2) years of peri-operative Surgical Technologist experience in an acute care hospital required. · Minimum two (2) years of cardiovascular/open-heart (CVOR) surgical experience required. · Experience supporting CABG and other open-heart procedures required. · Endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) experience strongly preferred. Required Licenses / Certifications · Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association required. · Surgical Technologist certification required. Communication Skills Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with surgeons, nursing staff, anesthesia, perfusion, patients, and all levels of the organization.
