Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawai'i’s only maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty hospital. It is well recognized as Hawai'i’s leader in the care of women, infants and children. With 243 beds, the not-for-profit hospital delivers 6,000 babies a year, and is also a medical teaching and research facility. Specialty services for patients throughout Hawai'i and the Pacific Region include intensive care for infants and children, 24-hour emergency pediatric and adult care, critical care air transport and high-risk perinatal care. Over 1,500 employees and more than 630 physicians provide specialty care at Kapi'olani. The hospital is home to the Kapi'olani Women’s Center and the Women’s Cancer Center, and offers numerous community programs and services, such as specialty pediatric clinics, the Kapi'olani Child Protection Center and the Sex Abuse Treatment Center.
The Mother Baby Care Unit offers specialized care for postpartum teen to adult women and normal newborns. Care is also provided to post-GYN surgical women. Our highly trained and caring staff provides education to the entire family during and after the pregnancy, as well as IV therapy, fetal monitoring, diabetes education, monitoring of patients requiring bed rest for premature delivery, post-surgical C-section, regular deliveries and postpartum complications and a variety of other services. The Mother Baby Care Unit provides support to mothers and their newborns in an atmosphere that promotes bonding of the family unit.
This Mother Baby Care Training Program is a mentored program for new graduates and experienced nurses without previous postpartum and newborn nursing background. This program is designed to support the learner throughout the transition process from novice to advanced beginner and consists of a blended learning approach which incorporates the following integral components: didactic instruction, preceptor based clinical practicum, AWHONN Perinatal Orientation Education Program online modules, and case-based simulation training. All training methodologies are geared towards enhancing the learner’s exposure to different populations of postpartum patients and newborns with varying compound health problems and towards developing relationships among the multidisciplinary health care team. The program is 8 weeks in duration and there will be no time away (PTO) allowed or granted during the program. Must be available for rotation to night shift and any shift length (4, 8, 10 or 12 hours) for the duration of the training. The outcome of this training will provide the intern with the opportunity provide comprehensive care to postpartum patients and newborns.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Experience in a maternal health setting.
