Registered Nurse – PreOp/PACU

The PreOp/PACU Nurse provides high-quality, evidence-based care to patients preparing for and recovering from anesthesia for a broad range of surgical and procedural interventions. Perioperative nurses play a critical role in providing safe, compassionate, and timely care while upholding all regulatory, safety, and organizational standards within the perioperative environment.

The PreOp/PACU at our facility boasts 17 rooms specializing in patient care for before and after surgery. Surgical specialties supported include general surgery, orthopedics, women’s health, ear-nose-throat, plastics, oncology, urology and pain management services. Perioperative nurses must demonstrate strong critical-thinking skills to prepare patients for surgery along with manage unstable postoperative patients. The role requires the ability to rapidly assess, intervene, and escalate care to ensure patient safety during the perioperative encounter. Perioperative nurses work closely with anesthesia, surgical teams, and ancillary departments to maintain a safe and efficient patient care environment. This is a fast-paced environment that requires attention to detail and time management skills. The position requires adaptability to fluctuating patient volumes, from high-intensity surgical days to low-volume periods requiring flexibility and readiness. This role includes call requirements at present.

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Education: The Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
    • Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).

General Statement of Duties: The Registered Nurse PPOP PACU provides nursing care and service during the preoperative and postoperative periods, integrating and making nursing judgments pertaining to the patient’s condition on a routine and emergency basis. Essential Duties: Monitors and assesses patient condition and reports any unusual symptoms, occurrences or discrepancies to manager and appropriate Physicians. Provides care safely, with adequate quality, quantity, and timeliness and according to applicable standards. Sets-up, operates and monitors the use of various systems, equipment and instrumentation required for the care of patients. Reviews and initiates Physician’s orders, administers medication, parenteral fluids and treatment as needed. Provides instruction, information, and counseling to patients and their families as needed. Distributes educational material as appropriate. Maintains medication and nursing documentation within the patient record. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and development levels of patients served.
