A Day in the Life of a ED Mental Health Registered Nurse


The ED Mental Health Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and supervises individual patient care according to unit policies and procedures. Accepts responsibility for direction of co-workers in the implementation of care plans. Provides specialized mental health care, including crisis intervention, mental health assessment, and support to patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies. May be required to work on other units according to distribution of staff and patients.

Here is What You Will Be Doing:

  • Completes nursing assessment of patient and documents appropriately into patient chart.
  • Evaluates the well-being of the patients medical, social, and emotional needs in the behavioral health setting.
  • Develops and reviews and revises a plan of care, including a discharge plan, based upon the assessment of patient's needs.
  • Implements medical and nursing orders per plan of care and documents appropriately.
  • Evaluates patient's response to care and engages in patient and family teaching as appropriate.
  • Oversees staff (LPN, ED Medic, ED tech, CNA, and PSA) assigned for providing patient care.
  • Maintain a safe behavioral health milieu.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Manager to assure the integration of the ANA’s Scope & Standards of Practice, assuring that these standards are identified as the measurement criteria for nursing practice on the unit.
  • Coordinates patient care in collaboration with providers, interdisciplinary teams and ancillary departments to achieve quality outcomes.
  • Completes Unit specific orientation and ongoing training and competencies as assigned based on department role, scope of services, and organizational standards.

  • Wyoming Registered Nurse License or enhanced Nurse Licensure (eNLC)
  • One (1) or more years of nursing experience
  • Cheyenne Regional AHA RQI within 14 calendar days of start date

Nice to Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing
  • One (1) or more years of Behavioral Health or Emergency Nursing Experience

Qualifications EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING 1. Must have current and valid State license as a Registered Nurse.2. Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.3. Working knowledge of Mental Health Laws and practice standards. 4. Working knowledge of interdisciplinary treatment team process, behavioral health programming and daily nursing functions for inpatient and outpatient behavioral health units. 5. Working knowledge of the continuum of care for behavioral health care.
