Fairview Health Services is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Operating Room (OR) Advanced Endoscopy Team at our University of Minnesota Medical Center East Bank location in Minneapolis, MN.
We are seeking a hardworking and motivated Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Operating Room (OR) team, which includes surgical technologists, nursing assistants, schedulers, instrument technicians, and MDs. This position will serve an all-adult patient population.
Schedule: This position will be working 64 hours every 2 weeks on the rotating day/evening/night shifts (mostly days). The schedule includes: 8 hour shifts (start times vary between 630am and 9am Monday thru Friday), weekday call as needed, currently 1 weekend shift (usually call) per schedule period.

- The OR at UMMC East Bank completes on average 45-50 scheduled cases per day
As an Operating Room RN, you will be responsible for:
- The Operating Room RN demonstrates the ability to establish an environment of safety for the surgical patient. They should be able to assess, diagnose, implement, and evaluate treatments and procedures that contribute to the physiological stability of the surgical patient. They may also serve as a circulator or scrub during operative procedures.
- Implements protective measures prior to operative or invasive procedure, including measures to prevent skin or tissue injury due to thermal, mechanical, electrical and chemical sources.
- Confirms identity before the operative or invasive procedure and verifies operative procedure, surgical site and laterality.
- Applies safety devices, performs required counts, manages specimen handling and disposition.
- Demonstrates knowledge about the psychologic, sociologic, and spiritual responses of patients and their families to the operative or other invasive procedure.
- Applies principles of aseptic technique while establishing and maintaining sterile fields.
- Performs skin preparations, monitors for wound contamination, and classifies the surgical wound.
- Ensures perioperative environmental sanitation.
The Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for all assigned patient population(s). The RN is responsible for performing these responsibilities in accordance with all policy, procedures, professional practice guidelines and the MN Nurse Practice Act. The RN coordinates care with members of the health care team and delegates responsibilities to others as appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Assesses patient needs and identifies expected nursing outcomes.
- Collaborates with patient, family and other health team members to develop a nursing plan as part of an integrated, comprehensive plan of care
- Develops an individualized plan based on age, social and cultural considerations, condition and other relevant needs.
- Evaluates care and patient response to interventions and expected outcomes.
- Collaborates and communicates effectively and respectfully with the patient, family and members of the health care team within and across care settings to promote partnership-based health care
- Demonstrates the ability to advance care by utilizing standards, guidelines, care pathways and continuous improvement to enhance patient outcomes.
- Promotes a culture of evidence based practice (EBP)
Required Qualifications
- MN Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross)
- Operating Room registered nurse experience and/or
- Successful completion of the AORN Peri-op 101 course and/or
- Clinical Experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist or completion of OR Internship
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing
- One year Operating Room Registered Nurse experience OR two years Surg Tech or Endoscopy Tech experience (GI Specialty)
