JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse serves as a leader of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA Culpeper by establishing an authentic personalized relationship with the patient and their chosen support system, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate an individualized plan of care that promotes optimal health. The Registered Nurse utilizes best scientific evidence and compassion to assist the patient in navigating their health journey. The Registered Nurse accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures.OR Nurse: Performs the circulating nurse' functions adhering to approved operating room procedures for the scheduled procedure. Prepares operating room according to the procedure to be performed and patient needs. Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before start of procedure; positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure. Anticipates needs of the surgical team; assists anesthesia staff by supporting the patient during administration of anesthesia. Assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient and prepares the operative site as directed by established procedure. Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards. Assists with identification and confirmation of operative site. Provides comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters. Provides continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel and documenting records appropriately.Preadmission RN: Provides effective and efficient supervisory activities necessary for patient care. Coordinates daily personnel assignments with the Clinical Coordinator. Assists in coordinating patient care activities with medical staff and health care team members to provide for continuity of patient care. Assists nursing staff in identifying and solving nursing care problems. Assists with nursing activities during emergencies. Participates in primary care of patients as needed and makes rounds as indicated to verify that patient needs are met. Enforces the implementation of nursing practice standards to provide quality patient care. Implements patient education pertaining to the preoperative interview. Provides preoperative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities. Describes the perioperative experience to the patient and/or family member. Preoperatively performs a nursing assessment via telephone interview. After reviewing patient data, consult the anesthesiologist when appropriate. Provides teaching regarding preoperative instructions. Consults interpreter when appropriatePACU RN: Performs preoperative interview and assessment. Provides preoperative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities. Describes the perioperative experience to the patient and/or family member. Performs a nursing assessment via telephone interview. After reviewing patient data, consult with the anesthesiologist when appropriate. Provides teaching regarding preoperative instructions. Consults interpreter when appropriate. Performs preoperative patient assessment required by the outpatient setting. Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient upon admission according to policy. Develops a plan for patient care based on assessment data; implements and documents preoperative care according to policy. Informs patient and family about routine care and procedures related to the perioperative experience. Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient' right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Documents preoperative care according to policy and procedure. Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate postoperative/post anesthesia period. Assesses and documents the patient' physical and emotional status upon arrival in the post-operative area. Documents postoperative care during the patient' recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to policies and procedures. Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered. Monitors patients and informs surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications. Prepares patient and family/significant other for discharge. Reviews postoperative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon. Provides teaching about appropriate care and procedures to follow upon returning home. Provides comfort and reassurance and promotes privacy and dignity. Confirms the patient and/or family/significant other understands conditions that require immediate care and methods to obtain immediate care. Attempts a postoperative phone call the following workday to inquire about problems or questions the patient and/or family/significant other may have.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. 4 Year/Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Experience:

1 year of relevant experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

Current RN licensure in applicable state required. CPI certification within three months of hire required for Behavioral Health, Emergency Department, and Central Staffing and Scheduling Office (CSSO). If your RN nursing license has been inactive, retired or lapsed for five years or more and you have not been licensed in another state during the last five years, successful completion of a Board approved refresher course is required prior to reactivating or reinstating your license. In order to be considered for current licensure status, you must apply for reinstatement within one year of completing the refresher course.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

Ability to perform basic nursing skills on groups of patients and ability to assume charge responsibility. Ability to multitask and prioritize quickly. Ability to administer medication utilizing the five rights. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to safely and effectively care for all patient populations which present to the department.

    • Administers and evaluates medication therapies, performs patient transfers, and transports patients via wheelchair, hospital bed, or stretcher to other departments.

    The base compensation range for this role is $33.93 - $57.30 hourly.  

    Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.  Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
