The Endoscopy RN manages the care of the adult or older patient beginning with the pre-procedure assessment, IV start, and education followed by procedural conscious sedation and monitoring, specimen collection and hands on assistance during the procedure. The RN performs the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for all assigned patient population(s). The RN performs these responsibilities in accordance with all policy, procedures, professional practice guidelines and the MN Nurse Practice Act. The RN coordinates care with members of the health care team and delegates responsibilities to others as appropriate.
This is a casual position, working 8 hours in a two week period.
Provides nursing care to adult or pediatric endoscopy patients in the Endoscopy/GI department, In-patient Units, Operating Room, Emergency Department and ICU. May also includes adult or pediatric minor surgeries.
Performs as a procedure nurse for endoscopy procedures:
- Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is critical to patients and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights.
- Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by patient’s condition and/or the hospital policies, procedures or protocols and reprioritize care accordingly.
- Pain Management including; administer medications, record, assess and observe patient progress, reactions and symptoms.
- Post procedural sedation and MAC monitoring, teaching and discharge instructions are an important part of our patient care
- Establish and implement nursing care plans for each patient through assessment, development, activation, evaluation and discharge.
- Organize, assign and supervise duties and responsibilities of other staff members as a team leader; orient and teach new staff members of the nursing team and students.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and facility.
- Participate in non-clinical assignments, which may include serving on special committees
- Responsible for the correct functioning of equipment and supplies for endoscopy procedures.
- Responsible for pre-procedure assessment, notifying physician and carrying out orders for all phases of care.
- Manages the intra and post procedure care of the patient including airway management and altered states of anesthesia.
- Responsible to assess, plan and teach patient and family about procedure and provide appropriate discharge planning.
- Assist physician with minor surgery procedures at the bedside.
- Responsible for proper handling of specimens from patients, properly identifying and preparing specimens for lab.
- Responsible to perform and assure proper cleaning of endoscopes and equipment and ability to carry out all aspects of equipment reprocessing.
- Responsible to complete initial and annual HLD and sedation competencies
- Equipment or software which may be used: EPIC, Provation MD, ENDORA, AER and Pyxis.
