Job Description

Planning : Demonstrates strong organizational and clinical judgment by accurately anticipating resource needs, identifying discrete tasks, setting priorities, and defining dependencies to ensure timely and efficient execution of responsibilities. Maintains high performance standards even when adapting to changes in major assignments. Uses time effectively and follows through to resolve issues. Within the nursing process, accurately documents assessments using unit-specific tools in accordance with hospital policies. Prioritizes patient needs, implements appropriate interventions, and evaluates their effectiveness, revising the plan of care as necessary. Proactively anticipates discharge needs to support continuity of care.

Educational Assessment & Professional Practice: Serves as a clinical resource to the healthcare team, patients, and families by mentoring, precepting, and actively participating in the orientation of new employees. Engages in huddles, rounding, bedside reports, and team communication to foster collaboration and continuity of care. Promotes professional development through advocacy for specialty certification and continuing education, while recognizing personal limitations and seeking appropriate resources to broaden knowledge. Demonstrates ability to assess educational and professional development needs using performance improvement data, course evaluations, and needs assessments to establish goals and priorities. Differentiates educational needs from system issues and communicates feedback on staff performance and progress to appropriate leadership. Actively contributes to Unit-Based Shared Governance and interdepartmental committees, serving as a unit liaison when requested and supporting the Magnet journey. Prioritizes creating a positive work environment focused on teamwork and recognition of individual excellence.

Nurse Education Training & Development: Develops and provides educational programs and conferences for team members. Supports socialization, education, and training of novice clinicians by serving as mentor. Identifies strengths and weaknesses in the clinical practice of team members and completes competency assessments, supports annual evaluations. Attends monthly Educator meetings and communicates new information. Acts as a conduit for new policies and procedures.

Orientation and Staff Development Criteria : Facilitate and evaluate unit orientation for new employees with the management team. Maintain hospital and unit-specific annual competencies. Maintain orientation manuals and educational files. Actively participate in unit-specific skills days. Provide counseling and guidance on orientation and educational needs. Act as a liaison for staff regarding educational matters. Identify areas for clinical and professional development. Encourage and facilitate learning experiences for staff. Assist in identifying and counseling staff on job-related issues. Provide recommendations/documentation related to hiring, termination, and promotion.

Ensures compliance with OSHA, Joint Commission, Board of Health, and hospital standards. Fulfills all regulatory, licensure, annual competency, and mandatory training requirements. Promotes high-quality patient care by developing and interpreting the hospital’s and nursing division’s philosophies and standards of care, enforcing adherence to state nursing regulations and other governing bodies. Actively participates in patient safety initiatives and performance improvement efforts. Develops, implements, and monitors action plans in response to survey findings or unit-specific issues. Maintains and regularly updates unit policies and procedures to reflect current best practices and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in nursing required

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution

Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred

Certification in area of specialty preferred

BLS Certification Required

A Brief Overview Works with the Nurse Manager of assigned unit(s) and other members of Nursing Leadership to create an environment that supports professional practice standards. Integrates unit education, evidence based practice, quality outcomes and strategic initiatives into the development of a collegial relationship with nursing staff and other health care professionals to contribute to high performance patient care environment. What You Will Do Establishes annual education goals with the Nurse Manager that support those set for the Department and Organization. Develops an education plan and annual competency and executes programming to operationalize goals using didactic education, simulation and demonstration. Facilitates the orientation of new staff to assigned units through collaboration and consultation with Nurse Managers and Preceptors to develop individual orientation plans based on assessed needs and maintains accurate orientation records. Provides consultation and direction to preceptors, nurses or nurse managers as needed and serves as a mentor for new and current nursing staff. Assesses the educational needs of staff in assigned areas in collaboration with nursing management. Uses a variety of methods including data collected from performance improvement activities, direct observation, patient satisfaction surveys, and hospital goals. Plans and implements formal and informal education activities to meet the needs of nursing staff in assigned areas. Provides clinical expertise at point of care including implementing care for complex patients or carrying out complex/high risk procedures. Maintains an accurate system of documentation related to the educational experiences of staff, including orientation and ongoing staff development. Reviews or develops unit policies and procedures in collaboration with staff; assuring that evidence based practice and research are integrated as appropriate. Identifies opportunities for improvement, evidence based practice and nursing research projects and initiates or participates in unit Performance Improvement activities. Facilitates, supports and encourages programs and initiatives that promote specialty certification and advanced education initiatives. Leads programs that support the Nursing Magnet Model and Peer Review structure in order to drive nursing performance improvement. Promotes and supports the Professional Excellence Program in collaboration with departmental leaders in research and performance improvement.
