With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the assistant nurse manager works with the nurse manager and provides oversight for patient care and nursing services on their assigned unit and shift. They promote quality evidence-based care and patient satisfaction in a fiscally responsive manner. The assistant nurse manager collaborates with the nurse manager in assessment and planning for nursing care. She/he assists in leading the daily operations of the unit. Acts as a resource, lead, and clinical role model for the patient care team. Advances and oversees patient care standards of the unit for the designated shift. Facilitates and coordinates patient care delivery and flow through the continuum of care. She/he carries out the responsibilities of the nurse manager in her/his absence with guidance from the Administrative Director. Job Duties

  • Plans, Directs and Coordinates nursing care for a specific patient care area in collaborationwith the nurse manager and other appropriate nursing staff.
  • Recruits, interviews and selects staff for the patient care unit.Provides leadership and direction in implementation of strategic goals and objectives.Develops, implements and evaluates unit policies, procedures and goals, which are consistent with department and organizational goals.Assists with the completion of regular performance evaluations for each staff member and serves as a clinical resource regarding policies and procedures, patient standards, performance improvement, and risk management issues.Assists with the completion of evaluations for new staff prior to completion of probationary period with input from appropriate nursing staff.Demonstrates effective conflict resolution skills.Councils employees and utilizes the disciplinary process as appropriate.Develops, implements and evaluates staffing plan to meet the patient and family care needs.
  • Develops implements and evaluates areas of improvement to increase quality of patient and family care in collaboration with the nurse manager.
  • Identifies issues related to quality of patient care, and develops, implements and evaluates unit improvement program/projects within a shared governance model.Accountable and responsible for continuous quality and regulatory management directives including JCAHO, OSHA, etc.Designs, implements and evaluates the unit patient satisfaction plan.
  • Acts as a resource and serves as a clinical role model to members of the health care team.
  • Assists professional development staff with the creation and implementation of educational programs. Recommends, participates in the development of and implements policies and procedures.Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives. Seeks opportunities for nursing research.Collaborates with professional development staff and nurse manager to set minimum competencies and oversees ongoing professional development of staff
  • Manages available resources insuring that the operation of the patient care area occurs within the limitations of the budget
  • Is knowledgeable about costs and revenue opportunities.Assists in the development of cost saving activities.Collaborate with nurse manager in budget forecasting.Educate healthcare team members on cost efficient care and appropriate staffing, and on the efficient use of material resources.
  • Monitors staff schedules to ensure adequate staffing to meet patient care needs and maintain quality patient care. Authorize overtime or scheduling changes to fill shifts as necessary. Completes payroll in collaboration with Nurse Manager. Provides volumes & adjustments to reflect variances in staffing needs within Smart Square.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing
  • 2 years acute care experience
  • Effective Communication- Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Uses the language of partnership with patients and families, engaging them in their health and health care.
  • Patient-and Family-Centered Practice- Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Cultural Awareness- Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.

  • Medication Administration and Prescription Knowledge of various medications used to treat patients, ability to apply this knowledge to the administration of medications and to the prescription of drugs for continuing treatment outside of the hospital.
  • Discharge Planning Knowledge of the patient's post-discharge needs and the ability to consider these needs in planning for discharge and arranging for follow-up care.
  • Assessment and Diagnosis Knowledge of various tools and techniques for patient assessment and nursing diagnosis or clinical judgement, ability to explore and analyze reasons behind symptoms and generate resolutions according to available drugs, facilities and techniques.
  • Health Information Documentation Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods, ability to record medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results in written or electronic form

Nurse Manager - Ambulatory

Job Description Provides leadership, coordination, and operational oversight for nursing and clinical support services within a pediatric ambulatory primary or specialty care site. The Ambulatory Nurse Manager is accountable for safe, efficient, family-centered care delivery; daily clinical operations; and the effective use of human, material, and financial resources to support quality outcomes, access, and an exceptional patient and family experience. This role partners closely with providers, practice leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to standardize workflows, support regulatory and accreditation readiness, develop staff, and drive continuous improvement across the site. The manager fosters a culture of accountability, professional growth, collaboration, and evidence-based practice while advancing the goals of Nemours Children’s Health and supporting high-quality pediatric ambulatory care. Essential Functions Provides leadership and oversight for daily nursing and clinical support operations within a pediatric ambulatory primary or specialty care site to ensure safe, efficient, and family-centered care delivery. Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing and clinical support staff, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, coaching, performance management, and professional development. Partners with providers, practice leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care delivery, align workflows, and promote a collaborative team environment across the site. Ensures compliance with regulatory, infection prevention, licensure, Joint Commission accreditation, Magnet, and organizational standards, and maintains readiness for audits, surveys, and inspections. Monitors and improves clinical quality, patient safety, service, and access outcomes by using data, identifying opportunities for improvement, and leading performance improvement initiatives. Assures appropriate staffing plans, patient flow, and resource utilization to support efficient operations, timely access, and high-quality patient and family experience. Supports development, implementation, and standardization of clinical workflows, policies, procedures, and competencies consistent with evidence-based practice and ambulatory care standards. Promotes staff engagement, accountability, shared decision-making, and a culture of respect, inclusion, and continuous learning. Participates in operational and fiscal planning, including monitoring labor, supplies, and other site resources to support responsible stewardship and departmental goals. Serves as a clinical and operational leader for the site, supporting change management, communication, and strategic initiatives that advance pediatric ambulatory care. Qualifications BSN required Master’s in nursing or related field preferred. Five years clinical experience required, preferably at least one year in pediatrics. Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice; knowledge of management theory and change process. Previous Management Experience Required.
