Operating Room (OR) RN is a valuable member of Perioperative and Surgical team. Responsibilities of the OR RN include, but are not limited to, circulating and scrubbing in surgical cases, monitoring patients and administering moderate sedation in select cases per Heywood Hospital’s moderate sedation policy. OR RN takes call per operating room rotation as required by the operational needs.

  • Reports Incidents in a timely and effective manner.
  • All employees with direct patient contact are responsible for actively engaging in the practice of, monitoring and enforcing compliance to hand hygiene.
  • Assesses (and reassesses), plans, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions/plans of care/patient goals.
  • Provides patient care based on standards of care, standards of practice, protocols, and established policies and procedures.

  • Promotes learning for colleagues and self (e.g. functions as preceptor, instructor, trainer, attends professional development programs, etc.).
  • Proactively identifies risk to patient safety and identifies opportunities to reduce medical/health care errors (i.e. appropriate reporting of errors/incidents).
  • Identifies ethical issues in care and develops plan to address.
  • Safely administers medications and intravenous therapy in accordance with physician’s orders, protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Assesses patient pain level upon admission and as necessary, depending upon diagnosis utilizing the numerical pain scale.
  • Reassesses effectiveness of pain control and notifies physicians as needed, as well as, documents assessment and patients’ response to medication.
  • Responsible for obtaining supporting information and completing required documentation related to medication reconciliation for use by the Attending MD.
  • Collaborates with surgeon, anesthesiologist, clinical coordinator and surgical technicians to assure the patients’ well being during surgical intervention.
  • Maintains sterile fields and directs the correct care, handling, and sterilization of sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Identifies patients correctly by checking patient identification bands and consent forms as well as verifying operative procedure and site before taking patients to the operating room.
  • Applies principles of aseptic practice, oversees the selection and preparation of supplies, equipment and instrumentation to all surgical cases.
  • Applies principles of body mechanics and adapts them to various situations during positioning and transfer of patients.
  • Assures that all techniques and practices carried out during the surgical procedure are accurate and reflect standards of perioperative practice.
  • Maintains sponge, needle and instrument counts according to policies and procedures, including notifying the surgeon of the result of the counts.
  • Identifies, labels, cares for and handles all specimens and cultures according to established policy and procedure.

Current MA RN License required. ACLS upon hire OR must hold an active BLS card and obtain AHA ACLS within 60 days of hire. Recent OR experience required.  CNOR preferred.   Excellent communication and critical thinking skills required. Must take call per unit rotation.
