Position Summary

The Gastroenterology/Endoscopy Registered Nurse provides safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures. The RN is responsible for pre-procedure assessment and preparation, intra-procedure monitoring and assistance, administration and monitoring of moderate sedation when authorized, post-anesthesia recovery, patient education, and discharge planning.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for personal conduct, strives for excellence in patient care.
  • Implements nursing process to provide quality care based on assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
    • Prepare patients for EGD, colonoscopy, and other diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
    • Continuously monitor cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, respiratory status, blood pressure, level of consciousness, pain, and patient response during procedures.
    • Identify patient properly and verify completeness of chart and procedure and procedural site, when applicable.
    • Plan, implement and evaluate patient care plan to meet the individualized needs of the patient.
    • Recognizes and responds promptly to airway compromise, oversedation, bleeding, perforation, hemodynamic instability, allergic reactions, and other procedural complications, including the appropriate use of reversal agents according to provider orders and hospital policy
    • Provide recovery care, including Aldrete scoring, pain and nausea management, discharge-readiness assessment, and post-procedure education.
  • Performs nursing procedures based on unit standards of care and hospital policies and protocols, and physician orders (medications, IVs, treatments, moderate sedation within the RN’s scope of practice, etc.)
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current Same Day Surgery/ GI related issues.

  • Updates documents and answers questions regarding the correct use of all forms, required in the daily operations of the unit.
  • Demonstrates competency in the circulating and procedural-assist responsibilities required in the GI/endoscopy setting, consistent with training, validated competency, and hospital policy:
    • GI/Endoscopy Procedural Nurse Identifies and obtains the supplies, medications, and equipment necessary to prepare the procedure room for the patient and scheduled procedure Verifies that all equipment is available, functional, and prepared according to hospital policy and manufacturer instructions. Assesses and addresses the patient’s individualized physical, emotional, cultural, and safety needs throughout the procedure. Verifies completion and accuracy of the patient’s medical record, including the pre-procedure assessment, informed consent, required laboratory results, medication reconciliation, allergies, and procedural documentation. Obtains, verifies, administers, and documents medications used during the procedure in accordance with provider orders, approved protocols, hospital policy, and the RN’s scope of practice. Continuously monitors and documents the patient’s cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, respiratory status, blood pressure, level of consciousness, pain, and response to medications and the procedure.
    • Accurately collects, handles, labels, documents, and transports specimens in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Maintains patient privacy, positioning, safety, and infection-prevention practices throughout the procedure.
    • Completes an accurate handoff to the recovery nurse, including the procedure performed, medications administered, specimens collected, patient response, and any complications or follow-up needs.
    • Performs the RN endoscopy scrub/procedural-assist role during diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures.
    • Safely prepares and handles endoscopic accessories and equipment according to hospital policy and manufacturer instructions.
    • Monitors the procedural environment and promptly communicates patient-safety, equipment, medication, or procedural concerns to the physician and healthcare team.
    • Participates in room turnover and ensures equipment, supplies, and accessories are appropriately cleaned, transported for processing, replenished, and available for subsequent procedures.

  • Report any change in the patient’s condition to the appropriate provider and healthcare team

  • Assist in developing, reviewing and revising all policies, procedures protocols, order sets, and standards of care for Same Day Surgery and GI/endoscopy services.

  • Inspects and ensures that all equipment for patient care is functional, safe, and properly maintained.
  • Removes malfunctioning equipment from service, labels it appropriately, and reports the issue according to hospital procedure
  • Maintains required clinical competencies and pursues continuing education relevant to GI/endoscopy, moderate sedation, recovery, patient safety, and emergency response.
  • Uses current policies, procedures, approved clinical references, and manufacturer instructions to support accurate and safe performance of assigned duties.
  • Participates in the Same Day Surgery/GI quality-improvement and patient-safety programs, including audits, performance-improvement activities, and corrective-action plans.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently licensed in the California Board of Registered Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification from an organization approved by Chinese Hospital.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification from an organization approved by Chinese Hospital.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing standards, the nursing process, medication administration, patient assessment, and safe procedural care.
  • Demonstrates ability to work and to communicate effectively/collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, and members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Maintain required licensure, certifications, education, and competencies throughout employment.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of community resources and cultural needs.
  • Proficiency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin.
  • At least one year of recent experience in GI/endoscopy, Same Day Surgery, procedural nursing, PACU, or another setting involving moderate sedation and post-procedure recovery.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, staff is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and/or listen. He/she uses his/her hands to do computer work, write reports, do equipment set-up/cleaning/storage, clerical support, etc. He/she will be using the phone frequently. Good vision is needed to be able to read schedules, enter accurate data, etc. He/she must have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability so as to carry out the above-enumerated duties.

Complies with Chinese Hospital Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations, guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include, following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statute, regulations, agreements or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs.

Base Pay Scale

Starting at $61.87 – $91.85 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.

We place a high importance on our employees and reward staff in several ways such as: • Competitive hospice industry compensation • Benefits package with multiple plan offerings and generous employer contribution • 401(k) Retirement plan with employer match • Supportive work culture which encourages work life balance • Substantial Paid Time Off, paid holidays & birthday benefit • Employee development program managed by in-house education department to support individualized orientation and professional growth needs. • Monthly mileage reimbursement • Employee Referral Program • Business casual attire for office staff Responsibilities JOB DUTIES/KNOWLEDGE/JOB PERFORMANCE: • Develops written plan of care in coordination with an interdisciplinary Team (IDT). • Oversees implementation of plan, evaluates and changes plan as necessary to meet patient/family needs. • Responsible for the direction of care provided by LVN and HA in accordance with patient’s plan of care. • Responsible for the supervision of services provided by the LVN and HA per TEH policy and regulatory requirements. • Communicates all changes to IDT and primary MD. • Performs job duties in clinical areas as stated in clinical competency checklist, policies/procedures, standards of care, and critical competencies based on Scope of Practice. • Maintains timely patient documentation using “point care” electronic charting. • Implements and maintains established hospice policies and procedures as well as Standards of Care and regulatory requirements. • Provides health care instruction to patient and family members. • Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel. • Participates in providing 24 hour, seven days a week coverage to patients/families (on-call and census fluctuation). • Performs admission assessment and admission when necessary. DEGREE OF TRAVEL: • Travel required for patient visits. • Occasional travel for educational purposes. Qualifications: • Must have Associates Degree, Bachelor Degree preferred. • Must have one year of acute or hospice pediatric experience • At least 12 months experience with 1-2 years preferred in acute care. • Current CA RN license. • Current CA driver’s license with proof of insurance. • Current CPR/BLS • Prefer certification as hospice nurse. • Pediatric experience preferred. • Proof of recent TB test result • Bilingual preferred. • Computer skills (word processing), use of adding machine, calculator, fax, photocopier.
