Job Summary:

To ensure an efficient process for all Admit Day of Surgery and Same Day Services patients, by coordinating the necessary nursing assessments, documentation, pre-admission testing and other pertinent information required for each patient prior to their scheduled day of surgery/procedure.

 

Accountabilities:

• 1. Coordinate the preoperative assessment of the patient’s pre surgical/procedure episode of care.

• a. Consistently assesses and modifies approach, communication and activities to reflect the needs of patients based on procedure/surgery, age, cultural diversity and developmental level.

• b. Demonstrates understanding of the unique needs of the patients

• c. Completes preadmission nursing assessment according to unit standards.

• d. Provides teaching based on assessment and established protocols.

• e. Performs accurate and timely documentation consistent with departmental policies

• f. Consistently meets department productivity standards, while performing all duties.

• 2. Ensures completion/receipt of required preadmission items prior to the day of surgery/procedure.

• a. Reviews pre-admission testing results, consults, history and physicals.

• b. Assesses clinical information and identifies abnormalities and clinical concerns. Then brings to attention of appropriate individuals. Follows up to ensure completion.

• c. Consistently follows established guidelines

• d. Implements physician protocols when appropriate

• e. Will assist with coordination of additional testing if required.

• 3. Effectively communicates with patients/significant others, providers, office staffs, Associates and other healthcare providers

• a. Utilizes effective interpersonal skills

• b. Recognizes interdepartmental relationships and interacts effectively.

• c. Effectively communicates pertinent patient information in a timely manner in both written and verbal context, while adhering to HIPPA policies.

• d. Communicates with physicians, office staff, other healthcare providers, third party payers and vendors as needed

• e. Demonstrates communication skills that and creates a cohesive, productive team environment.

• 4. Demonstrates ongoing competence in nursing assessment and decision-making skills.

• a. Recognizes legal responsibilities and functions within limitations as specified by the Nurse Practice Act.

• b. Maintains competence through practice and ongoing participation in in-services and formalized professional conferences.

• c. Demonstrates the ability to perform with clinical proficiency in crises and medical emergencies

• d. Demonstrates professionalism and adherence to ethical standards while performing duties.

• e. Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in completion of tasks

• f. Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiative and goals

• g. Attends and participates in meetings according to departmental standards

• h. Assumes additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by PAT lead and Sr. Executive Director of Surgical services.

 

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree-BSN, Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years varied clinical experience required
  • Computer skills with EMR and Microsoft Products
  • Current RN licensure by the State Board of Nursing, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Are you living your life's work? 7 Schiedt is an 18-bed hematology/oncology unit at Pennsylvania Hospital that provides the highest quality of care to its patients. 7 Schiedt achieves outcomes that exceed national benchmarks in quality, employee engagement, and patient satisfaction through a strong interdisciplinary team approach. Our staff provide direct care for patients requiring chemotherapy administration, autologous stem cell transplant, pain management, palliative care and symptom management, transfusion-free medicine, and end-of-life and inpatient hospice care. While a majority of our patient volume is medical, we also care for surgical gynecology/oncology patients. RN patient assignments are most frequently 4-5:1, depending on the overall acuity of the assignment. These patient assignments are also supported by highly skilled Patient Care Technicians (PCT) that perform vital signs, accu-checks, electrocardiograms, intake and outputs, phlebotomy, assistance with ADLs and ambulation. The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague independently provides patient care through the application of the nursing process and accepts accountability for the nursing care of assigned patients. Assigned patients may range in age from infancy to the elderly. The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague demonstrates within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Technology/Informatics, and Teamwork (Definitions listed below). The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague works closely with the interprofessional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The nurse focuses on expanding the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age appropriate considerations of assigned patients. The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague seeks feedback in assuming leadership roles and provides feedback for improved clinical practice. The nurse demonstrates how nursing practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals and the care delivery system. The nurse complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies. Evidence Based Practice and Research: The nurse evaluates and integrates best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient and family preferences and values for the delivery of optimal health care and system effectiveness. Leadership: The nurse effectively collaborates and applies innovative, systems thinking to engage in systematic, evidence-based problem solving and decision making to promote effective changes within a complex care delivery system supporting the vision of Penn Medicine. Person and Family Centered Care: The nurse recognizes the patient (or the patient’s designee) as the source of control and a full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for the patient’s preferences, values, and needs. Professionalism: The nurse demonstrates a commitment to the nursing profession through lifelong learning, adherence to ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses, participation in a professional organization and advancing community outreach. Safety: The nurse minimizes risk of harm to patients, families, providers and self through system effectiveness and individual performance. Technology/Informatics: The nurse utilizes appropriate information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making across the continuum. Teamwork: The nurse effectively engages in the process of cooperation, coordination, and collaboration in an effort to provide for safe, quality outcomes for patients within inter and intra-professional teams, including virtual teams. Credentials: Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required) BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association. Registered Nurse - PA (Required) Pennsylvania RN licensure Education or Equivalent Experience: Bachelor of Science Nursing (Required) BSN from an accredited school of nursing More than 15 months relevant professional nursing experience and completion of the Nurse Residency Program, if applicable.
