Responsibilities

The Cardiology Department at Mayo Clinic Health Systems – Eau Claire is a growing and progressive practice. The practice currently consists of eleven general cardiologists, four interventional cardiologists, three electrophysiologists, two electrophysiology physician assistants and eleven general cardiology nurse practitioner/physician assistants.

The inpatient NP/PA cardiology role involves carrying the cardiology call pager overnight (off-site MD on back-up call), cross coverage for our cardiology hospital consult service as well as evaluating any new cardiology consults overnight.  

The role of the general cardiology nurse practitioner or physician assistant includes providing comprehensive direct and indirect patient care to general cardiology patients across the continuum of care.  

The position requires the ability to communicate with physicians regarding changes in patient's clinical condition; results of diagnostic studies; and patient symptomatology as appropriate. Our team-based care model requires strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate and work together as part of the team.  
The American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Nurses provide for a basis for practice for the nurse practitioner. The National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants and American Academy of Physician Assistants provides guidelines for Physician Assistant practice.

Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner: Masters-prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current WI RN and APRN license and certification as a FNP, ANP, or AGNP with recertification every 5 years under regulating agencies guidelines (ANCC or AANP). 
Current prescriptive authority in the state of Wisconsin (APNP certification and DEA) obtaining 8 contact hours per year in clinical pharmacology/therapeutics relevant to Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber’s area of practice.

Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a Physician Assistant by the WI Medical Examining Board. 
Must complete 100 hours of CME every two (2) years and take the recertification exam every ten (10) years. Must be supervised by licensed physician.  Prescriptive Authority in the State of Wisconsin (WI Board of Medical Examiners and DEA).

Additional Qualifications:

  • Active BLS and ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross at start date and DEA registration required
  • Eligible for hospital and clinic privileges.  
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English. Additional languages preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills following current practice standards.
  • Strong cardiovascular knowledge base involving cardiovascular physiology, medications, and treatment modalities recommended.
  • Basic computer aptitude.
