Job Description

The Outpatient Radiology Nurse provides safe, efficient, and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing outpatient diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures. The nurse supports patient flow and serves as a clinical resource for IV access, hydration therapy, contrast safety, and emergency response.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform IV insertion and port access for outpatient imaging procedures.
  • Administer and monitor IV hydration as ordered in preparation for or following imaging studies.
  • Assess, recognize, and manage contrast reactions, following established departmental protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Initiate appropriate emergency response, including escalation to the medical team and activation of 911 when indicated.
  • Maintain and manage the department’s allergy/contrast allergy protocol list, ensuring accurate documentation and communication of patient allergies and required precautions.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after imaging procedures and identify changes in condition requiring nursing intervention.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, technologists, providers, and other members of the healthcare team to promote safe and efficient patient care.
  • Provide patient education regarding IV procedures, hydration, contrast administration, and post-procedure instructions.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and patient safety requirements.


Qualifications

  • Current New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred/required based on departmental standards.
  • Previous radiology, outpatient, emergency, or procedural nursing experience preferred.
  • Strong assessment, IV access, communication, and emergency response skills.

The RN is a member of a designated health care team and collaborates, coordinates and guides team members in planning patient care and achieving goals. Performs chemo, therapeutic treatments and therapeutic phlebotomies. Performs conscious sedation and other procedures specific to specialty practices. Administer blood and blood products, specific to specialty areas. Administer oral/IM/IV/SQ/Inhaled medications Responsible for all unit enabling clinical operations including patient flow, assignment, ordering and medical record preparations. Triage all sick and walk-in patients. Responsible for telephone communication, telephone triage, communicate test results in collaboration with provider including appropriate follow-up. Accesses and maintains central lines/ports for blood drawing and medication administration. Provides and initiates respiratory interventions according to standards. Coordinates delegates and/or provides all other patient care activities. Initiates CPR Coordinates in-patient admissions and ER referrals. Identifies learning family/patient needs, including level of comprehension. Informs about treatments, tests, preps, OR procedures. Instructs on home and self-care. Evaluates client outcomes through return demonstration and/or verbalization of understanding. Maintains an environment that is conducive to meeting patient care needs and that facilitates patient flow. Promotes and provides for patient safety in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Practices and monitors infection control. Maintains a clean, quiet, organized patient care environment Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients families and significant others. May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary. Qualifications Requirements: Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree preferred, Current NY State Registered Nurse License and registration certificate required Minimum 2 years Medical Oncology Nursing Experience Required Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Active Chemotherapy - Biotherapy Provider Card required Certification in area of specialty is highly recommended, BLS and ACLS required (American Heart Association) Ability to lift and move heavy objects/patients. Proficient in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines Ability to handle multiple priorities and to deal calmly with individuals under stress; ability to organize the activities of multiple patients; effective interpersonal and communications skills required, excellent telephone etiquette; ability to communicate effectively with patients and families Effective organizational skills, basic computer skills, Effective interpersonal skills, Ability to problem solve using critical thinking.
