Provides disease management with an understanding of oncology, chemotherapy, and side effects, can monitor and address symptoms. Works with patients and families to provide an understanding of their disease, their treatment plans, and address patient quality of life issues. Documents assessment and interventions, entering in a timely manner in the electronic medical record. Collaborates with and supports providers with daily assistance in managing and coordinating patient care. Evaluates and assesses health issues presented by patients and their caregiver; communicates pertinent and necessary issues to the patient.

The successful candidate:

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills to manage complex patient and family needs.
  • Conducts and reinforces patient education, including treatment plan/regimen, financial implications of care, symptom management, side effects, patient family responsibilities related to self-care, and available resources at home or at facility.
  • Assesses needs and coordinates services, internally and externally to meet needs including, but not limited to medications, equipment, and home care services. Utilizes nursing processes and evidenced based practice/research to lead and coordinate patient care to positive impact on patients and department operations.
  • Responds in a timely manner to patient and family needs at home through effective symptom management, coordination of home care services and crisis management.
  • Works under varied levels of supervision; may oversee work of LPNs, collaborates with physician to provide guidance to MAs or other ancillary nursing staff.
  • Administer medications via all routes, using the 6 rights, medication bar scanner and monitoring patient for side effects.
  • Ability to collect blood specimens and blood cultures.
  • Ability to care for patients with IV lines, central lines, and ports.
  • Maintenance and care of patients with ostomy/ileostomy and urostomy.
  • Care and assess wounds, suture removal, application of surgical tape and wound drain removal.
  • Utilizes Follow Up Board tasks to effectively manage patient follow-up and current patient status.
  • Ensures timely response to Secure Health Messages (SHM) from patients or caregivers.
  • Involved in the assessment, planning, and care of patients who undergo diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures. Provides nursing support to technologists in all Radiology modalities as needed.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • 1-year experience in oncology
  • Associate Degree in Nursing or equivalent
  • Arizona Registered Nurse License or a Registered Nurse License form a Compact State
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification- an approved American Heart Association (AHA) training site, American Safety & Health Institute, or Red Cross BLS certification is required upon hire. If their current certification does not meet the guidelines, employees will have (30) days from the date of hire to acquire attend an onsite initial BLS course and will be required to renew every two years.

SUMMARY Provides direct nursing care to clients during the surgical abortion procedure and for recovery care for post-surgical abortion period. The RN works in partnership with the Health Center Team to provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Participates as a member of a team providing confidential, quality patient services, allowing patients to maintain a sense of dignity, trust and safety. Follows PPFA and the organization’s protocols, policies and procedures and any center-specific policies and procedures. Ensures productivity expectations, customer service and compliance standards are maintained. Abides by the organization’s mission in performing job duties. The employee whose signature appears above agrees to be accountable for the ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES listed below; other duties may be assigned: GENERAL PRIORITIES Procedure Room Provide excellent customer service, eliciting client needs, and educating clients on health center services and community resources. Evaluate clients regarding their risk for STIs. Ensures that any client who requests an abortion is aware that she may change her decision at any time and will be provided with alternatives and will receive accurate information and appropriate referrals. Assist physician and patient during abortion procedures that utilize IV sedation by establishing IV access, performing blood draws, administering medications per physician orders, monitoring patient vital signs and lab work, and completing all required documentation per protocol. Ensure patient electronic records/charts and logs are completed and maintained in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, including staff signatures and initials where required. Notifies physician of any medical problem or other special concerns of client that may relate to the abortion or choice of birth control method. Assist in the set-up and clean-up of exam rooms. May perform blood draws, TB testing, injections, including vaccines, basic ultrasonography for gestational dating after completion of ultrasound training and under the direction of the physician. Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician. At the end of each procedure day, secures all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage. DIRECT RESPONSIBILITIES Recovery Room • Monitor patients in recovery room, including taking vital signs, dispensing medication, giving verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post abortion complications to the MD on duty. Informs client of need for post-abortion follow-up. • Maintains client statistics to be given to on-call staff. • Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room. • Completes appropriate cleanup of the recovery room at the end of each clinic including but not limited to locking up medications, cleaning recliners, emptying trash.
