Short Description
The Director of Nursing Operations is responsible for the strategic and day‑to‑day oversight of centralized nursing staffing and patient flow operations across the organization. This role ensures safe, efficient, and cost‑effective deployment of nursing resources by leading the Staffing Office, Nursing Supervisors, Flow Supervisors, and Float Pool. The director collaborates closely with clinical leadership, hospital operations, and support services to optimize patient throughput, maintain regulatory compliance and quality initiatives, and align staffing with organizational priorities. This position ensures a Culture of Service and quality is being fostered and ensures promoting positive patient outcomes.
- Provides comprehensive leadership for centralized nursing staffing operations, including the staffing office, nursing and flow supervisors, and the float pool, ensuring safe, compliant 24/7 coverage across all clinical areas. This includes developing and executing staffing and contingency plans to address fluctuations in census, acuity, and workforce availability; optimizing float pool utilization to minimize agency and premium labor; and collaborating with nursing leadership to proactively plan for seasonal variation, service line growth, and organizational initiatives. In coordination with Executive Leadership, the Director of Nursing Operations will assist in implementing the strategic and operational plans of the organization.
- Oversee and coordinate patient flow operations to ensure timely admissions, transfers, and discharges by collaborating with nursing and flow supervisors and key interdisciplinary partners, monitoring flow metrics, and implementing improvements to enhance capacity management, efficiency, and patient experience. Assures efficiency, effectiveness and standardization of processes and presentation across the practices.
- Provides leadership and support to staffing office, nursing, and flow supervisors by ensuring effective onboarding, competency, scheduling, and performance management, fostering a culture of accountability and teamwork, and serving as a clinical and operational resource during off‑hours and high‑acuity situations. May require on call coverage, evenings, weekends, or holidays as operational needs dictate.
- Ensure effective onboarding, scheduling, competency assessment, and ongoing professional development for supervised staff.
- Conducts department meetings and continually communicates a clear and constant message regarding department goals to produce desired results.
- Develops, reviews, and updates departmental policies using evidence-based practice and current literature.
Experience Required
Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
Education Requirements
- Graduate of NLN accredited School of Nursing.
- Bachelors required.
- Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) Required
License/Certification Requirements
- Current NJ-RN License (Registered Nurse).
- Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support).
