General Summary of Position


The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) provides clinical and operational leadership for ambulatory OB/GYN and Women’s Wellness services at MedStar Health, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care across outpatient women’s health settings. In collaboration with nursing leadership and interdisciplinary partners, the ADON oversees daily clinical operations, supports staffing and resource management, promotes evidence-based nursing practice, and ensures compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and quality and patient safety initiatives. This role supports the professional development and performance of nursing associates, promotes clinical excellence and service satisfaction, and helps implement strategies to improve patient access, care coordination, operational efficiency, and clinical outcomes. The ADON fosters a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and compassionate care while advancing MedStar Health’s commitment to excellence in women’s health and ambulatory nursing services. 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing, develops and implements unit and departmental goals, policies, and procedures to support high-quality ambulatory OB/GYN and Women’s Wellness services.
  • Provides clinical and operational oversight of ambulatory nursing services, ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centered care delivery in accordance with MedStar Health policies, clinical practice guidelines, and regulatory standards.
  • Develops effective partnerships with physicians, advanced practice providers, clinical staff, and interdisciplinary departments to promote coordinated care, efficient workflows, and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Oversees staffing, scheduling, productivity, and resource utilization to ensure appropriate nursing coverage and efficient daily operations across assigned ambulatory services.
  • Supports the recruitment, selection, onboarding, coaching, performance evaluation, and professional development of nursing associates in collaboration with nursing leadership.
  • Promotes evidence-based nursing practice and ensures staff competency in ambulatory clinical workflows, women's health services, patient education, and applicable clinical procedures.
  • Supports quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve clinical outcomes and the patient experience.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction, investigates concerns and complaints, and implements strategies to improve service excellence, patient engagement, and continuity of care.
  • Collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient access, appointment flow, care coordination, and the delivery of timely ambulatory services.
  • Contributes to budget development, monitoring, and fiscal management, ensuring appropriate use of staffing resources, clinical supplies, equipment, and other departmental assets.
  • Supports the development and implementation of clinical protocols, staff education, orientation programs, competency assessments, and practice changes that enhance the quality and consistency of women's health services.
  • Maintains a professional environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, shared decision-making, associate engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Participates in hospital committees, interdisciplinary initiatives, and performance improvement projects that support organizational goals and nursing excellence.
  • Assumes leadership and operational responsibilities in the absence of the Director of Nursing and provides coverage for other nursing leaders as needed.
  • Maintains current nursing knowledge and professional competency through continuing education, professional development, and engagement with emerging standards and practices in ambulatory nursing and women's health.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required and
  • Master's degree in Nursing or a health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred

Experience

  • 3-4 years of progressive nursing care experience required and
  • 1-2 years leadership and management experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia - jurisdiction is dependent on the entity of employment. Upon Hire required and
  • Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration Upon Hire preferred and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
