Over 10,000 homeless individuals are cared for by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program each year. Job Summary: Hours: Per Diem; as needed, weekdays and weekends, shifts will vary: 6am-2:30pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, 12:00pm-8:30pm & 7:00am-8:30pm Union: Yes Union Name: 1199SEIU Patient Facing: Yes Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is looking for a Patient Benefits Coordinator/Medical Assistant to provide clinical and clerical support services at the Southampton Street Shelter and Transitions Shelter. The position is crucial to assure the continuity of patient care, providing an essential link for communication involving all departments and including transportation. Responsibilities: Clinical Support : Under the direction of the Site Manager, RN Clinic Manager, and/or Charge Nurse, performs a variety of appropriately delegated patient care interventions Collaborates with the supervising RN throughout the shift to determine appropriate work assignments and priorities, as well as communicating the status of delegated task completion and outcome of patient data findings. Maintains timely ongoing verbal communication in order to assure good patient care and the effective running of the Clinic Responsible for collecting, collating, and entering data and information into the applicable database or format in an accurate and timely manner; maintains appropriate equipment logs and records per standards Accurately collects requested patient date (e.g. vital signs, weights and reason for visits), notifying the supervising RN of abnormalities; performs basic patient testing, including, but not limited to, tests for guiac, urine dip, and glucose fingerstick Treats patient in a manner that preserves and supports patient confidentiality, patient rights, and patient’s dignity; act as a member of the team of care givers Collects, labels, and sends specimens to the lab, with appropriate laboratory slips and/or requisitions Assists nurse/provider during complex treatments/procedures, including but not limited to, doing preps and set-ups for examinations/treatments, assisting during procedures when requested or required Check inventories on a weekly basis, order clinic supplies and stock them in their appropriate location upon arrival in order to avoid a shortage or misplacement of necessary supplies Clerical Support: Work effectively with BHCHP administrative and clinical staff to obtain information or paperwork necessary for enrolling patients into the appropriate medical or cash benefits programs. Copying, faxing and filing as needed Greet and register all patients Phone coverage and triage of calls Scheduling and recording primary and specialty appointments correctly and in a timely manner Handle third party billing process Qualifications: Successful completion of a Certified Medical Assistant program High School Diploma or Equivalent required Phlebotomy required Experience in a medical setting preferred Secretarial training a plus Knowledge of medical terminology and vital signs Computer skills preferred, including MS Office, MSI, IDX, Logician, EPIC Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier) Compensation: The compensation is $22.25 per hour. Provide good customer service on the phone, patients, doctors and other medical staff. Work well under pressure. Perform CLIA waived moderate testing. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include the following: Checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physician with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients; answering calls and providing pertinent information. 2. Proficiency in collecting correct blood samples and other body fluids, ensuring proper patient identification and labeling of samples. 3. Follows hospital policies and procedures for transporting and delivering samples to laboratory. Knowledge of handling laboratory supplies and stocks supplies. 4. Ensure that patients receive appropriate competent, and quality clinical care and that customer service meets patient’s expectation. a. Adherence by staff to all policy and procedures. b. Provides age-appropriate care. c. Reporting monitoring and management of patient and staff incidents. d. Monitoring and management of patient and physician satisfaction results. 5. Follows standards precautions using personal protective equipment as required. Knowledge and performance of sterile tech. 6. Proficient in clerical responsibilities including the following: Sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately. 7. Performs facility responsibilities as assigned which may include the following: Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. 8. May perform special tests such as clotting times, bleeding times, and glucose tolerance tests and report results to other lab personnel. 9. Maintains Point of Care documents and performs Quality Control management. 10. Shows good customer service on phone and in person to anyone that enters the facility. 11. Performs miscellaneous tasks that promote smooth operations or other duties as deemed necessary. 12. Completes CCM Roster on a monthly basis. 13. Stay current on CCM changes and requirements from CMS. 14. Act as a liaison between our provider and the patient when coordinating community resources, access to specialty services, follow-up healthcare, etc. 15. Follow-up and help complete identified referrals. Coordinate with specialists and help to integrate recommendations from our provider. Identify barriers for lack of follow through or potential barriers to community resources. 16. Other duties as assigned. Preforms a variety of patient care activities, such as vaccine/medication administration, phlebotomy, and point of care testing. Education: Completion of a medical assistant program or equivalent experience; or Completion of a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces; or Completion of Basic or Advanced Oregon Emergency Medical Technician program (Oregon only) Licensure MA certification required within one year, from either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
