Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner - Gastroenterology/Hepatology

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY Function as an Advanced Practice Nurse and change agent incorporating the primary role of nurse practitioner and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes for adult Gastroenterology patients. Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization. Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for motility disorder patients. Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care. Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for motility disorder patients, with regard to patient condition and age, and follow universal precautions. Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena. Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place. Preform procedure consent and history and physicals (H&P) in DHC procedure unit as desired. Maintain responsibility for obtaining patient history and physical, and obtaining procedure consents in the Digestive Health Center procedure unit. Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families. Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence. Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies. Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes. Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs. Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise. Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals. Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations. Incorporate research findings into practice. Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes. Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned. Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals. Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge. Participate in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community and professional organizations. (Current UI employees are not eligible for incentive) The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a part-time (50%) Staff Nurse to provide direct nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic adult cardiac catheterization procedures. Ensure open and effective channels of communication with patients, family/caregivers and all health care team members involved in the pre/intra/post-care of adult cardiac catheterization patients. Apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health, illness, and procedure. Positively collaborate and coordinate the continuum of care within a multi-disciplinary team and across divisions/units. Perform patient care according to patient priority (includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses), and departmental, divisional, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
