A Brief Overview Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of direct care to assigned patients with simple to complex health care needs in inpatient, outpatient and procedural areas. Models effective leadership skills through role modeling, mentoring and effective communication. Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned. Directly delegates and supervises the practice of ancillary staff (LPN’s, PCA’s, Tech’s, Unit Secretaries, etc.) and is knowledgeable of the tenets of the NJ Scope of Practice guidelines. Supports a professional practice environment by functioning as a role model and resource person and also functions as a preceptor for nursing staff and participates in the orientation of other unit employees. Participates in unit-based and organization-wide activities, committees and community activities as appropriate Identifies own learning needs with respect to nursing practice and pursues educational support to meet these needs. Routinely utilizes Evidence Based Practice literature, policy and procedure manuals and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy in the delivery of care. Purpose of Your Job Position The primary purpose of your position is to provide direct nursing care to the residents, and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by CNAs/GNAs and other nursing personnel. To monitor the performance of CNAs/GNAs, nursing and non-licensed personnel, provide education and counseling, perform disciplinary action as necessary, and complete performance evaluations. Such supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our Center, and as may be required by the Director of Nursing Services or Nurse Supervisor to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. Duties and Responsibilities Administrative Functions Direct the day-to-day functions of the CNAs/GNAs or other nursing personnel in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care Center. Ensure that all assigned nursing personnel including CNAs/GNAs comply with the written policies and procedures established by this Center. Periodically review the department’s policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc. Make recommendations for revisions. Provide discipline and evaluations of assigned CNAs/GNAs and other nursing personnel in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the Center. Issue verbal and written disciplinary warnings to assigned CNAs/GNAs and other nursing personnel for violations of current rules, regulations, and guidelines of the Center. Meet with your assigned nursing personnel, including CNAs/GNAs, as well as support personnel, in planning the shifts’ services, programs, and activities. Ensure that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects the day-to-day nursing procedures performed in this Center. Ensure that all nursing service personnel comply with the procedures set forth in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual. Make written and oral reports/recommendations concerning the activities of your shift, as required. Cooperate with other resident services when coordinating nursing services to ensure that the resident’s total regimen of care is maintained. Ensure that all nursing service personnel are in compliance with their respective job descriptions. Participate in the maintenance and implementation of the Center’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department. Participate in Center surveys or inspections made by authorized government agencies, as may be requested. Periodically review the resident’s written discharge plan. Participate in the updating of the resident’s written discharge plan, as required. Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan, as necessary. Interpret the department’s policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies, as required. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents, as required. Complete accident/incident reports, as necessary. Provide information to the Billing Office as necessary to insure accurate resident billing. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary. Education Must possess, at a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university, or graduate from an approved LPN/RN program. Experience Not applicable. On-the-job training provided. Specific Requirements Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN or LPN in this state. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served. Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities. Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel. Must be able to evaluate the performance, initiate disciplinary actions, and prepare and complete performance evaluations for personnel. Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures that are necessary for providing quality care. Monitor the effectiveness of the plan of care through direct observations of care rendered and through weekly wound rounds/ reassessment. Develop plan of care for resident with a current pressure sore, or evaluated as high risk for the development of pressure sores. Provides reports on the type and frequency of wound in the facility. Summary/Objective In keeping with our organization’s goal of improving the lives of the Residents we serve; the Assistant Director of Nursing plays a critical role in providing superior customera service and nursing services to all Residents in the facility. The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing (D.O.N) in the planning, development and overall operation of the Nursing Department which ensures Residents receive quality care 24 hours a day. Assists the D.O.N with planning, directing, and supervising the activities of the nursing staff. 2. Ensures the Nursing Department is in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. 3. Develop, implement and update department policy and procedures when necessary or as directed. 4. Assists with staffing to ensure Resident needs and regulatory requirements are met at all times. 5. Participates in Federal, State and Local agency annual surveys. 6. Reviews any deficiencies noted by government agencies during inspections and assists with the implementation of changes needed to correct any deficiencies found. 7. Completes annual performance reviews of all subordinate staff. Provides guidance and education to staff in regards to their performance. 8. Provides counseling and disciplinary action to subordinate staff members as needed. 9. Responsible for training and educating staff members. 10. Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are maintained at all times. Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies. 11. Reports all hazardous conditions, damaged equipment and supply issues to the appropriate persons. 12. Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of Residents/residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment. 13. Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in Resident care areas. 14. Assist with new admissions, re-admissions and assist with the transfer of Residents to different rooms within the facility. 15. Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with Residents, visitors, families, peers and supervisors. 16. Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services. Supervisory Responsibility This position directly supervises all Nursing staff including but not limited to R.N’s, L.P.N’s and C.N.A’s. Work Environment This job operates in a health care setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the facility. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role may also encounter Residents who may have contagious illnesses. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work This position is part of a healthcare facility that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
