Responsibilities PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Regularly performs the duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse for patients of all age groups. When serving as Preceptor Nurse, serves as a role model and resource to the nursing staff. Also works with the manager and Nurse Clinician to ensure a well-planned and implemented orientation and training program for new employees. Identifies and recommends training needs of staff, and participates in developing new training programs. When serving as Charge Nurse, coordinates daily activities and distribution of work in specific area assigned. Makes shift assignments taking into account patient acuity, area staffing needs, and staff qualifications. Initiates staffing as needed for next shift. May oversee care provided by Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Unit Secretaries, Clinical Associates, and Patient Care Technicians on assigned shift. Assists in directing unit activities in emergency/disaster situations, such as a fire or code blue. Assists in the ongoing development and administration of hospital and department Quality Improvement program. Serves as a communication liaison between staff, patients, physicians, and families. May participate in weekend and call rotation. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/visitor/patient injury‑accident to supervisor.
