Validates these priorities with healthcare team members and documents appropriately. Develops an individual plan of care based on the age and assessed needs of the patient. Develops the plan in collaboration with the patient and/or family, the physician, and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Updates the plan based on changes in the patient's condition and communicates changes in the plan to other members of the team. Identifies realistic and measurable goals and outcomes to be attained prior to discharge. Validates these with the patient and/or family. Demonstrates respect for the patient's/family's cultural, spiritual, and belief system in planning for care. Includes planning for discharge to assure continuity of care and a smooth transition post discharge from one level of care to another (to include appropriate referrals). Provides direct care to assigned patients consistent with the established nursing plan. Performs specific tasks based on organizational, departmental and/or unit policies and procedures within the RN scope of practice. Delegates nursing tasks as appropriate to members of the healthcare team, developing written assignments (if appropriate) and ensures completion of assigned tasks. Monitors quality of care delivered on a continual basis; ensures appropriate surveillance of assigned patients. Provides care based on patient and unit priorities, coordinating and organizing tasks as appropriate, utilizing known resources internal and external to the unit. Incorporates cost containment principles into nursing care. Assumes responsibility for patient safety by maintaining a safe environment to include awareness of safety procedures, protocols and adherence to patient care standards. Utilizes appropriate technology in daily practice. Utilizes performance indicators to collect data, monitor quality and effectiveness while providing nursing care. Completes assigned hospital/unit performance improvement monitoring (audits). Evaluates nursing plan of care for effectiveness and determines progress toward expected outcomes. Revises diagnosis, outcomes and plan of care based on evaluation of data. Reports changes in patient status and refers unresolved problems to appropriate health team members. Discusses outcomes with peers via shift-to-shift report and with other healthcare team members as appropriate. Evaluates opportunities for quality improvement and based upon evaluation, incorporates PI recommendation into nursing plan of care as appropriate. Summary: The Behavioral Health Emergency Medicine RN provides specialized care to patients experiencing mental health crises or behavioral health/substance dependence emergencies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for helping individuals with behavioral health needs and clinical expertise in behavioral health crises, exhibiting a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Responsibilities: Performs comprehensive assessments of patients presenting with mental health issues, behavioral/substance crises, and medical concerns in the emergency department setting. Recognizes and assesses signs of mental health disorders, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Delivers immediate, compassionate care during psychiatric crises or episodes to prevent harm and reduce agitation. Provides immediate nursing interventions, such as crisis de-escalation, medication intervention, and monitoring of safety and mental status changes. Uses therapeutic communication skills and de-escalation techniques to manage agitated or distressed patients. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate and timely care for patients with behavioral health concerns . Collaborates on the develop ment and implement ation individualized treatment plans , and determination of appropriate interventions , including the potential use of restraints or seclusion when clinically necessary and in compliance with established protocols. Document s patient interactions, assessments, and treatments accurately and in a timely manner in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Maintain s compliance with hospital policies, legal requirements, and accreditation standards related to mental health care and patient confidentiality. Guides and educates patients and their families regarding mental health disorders, treatment options, and community resources. Facilitates communication with families and caregivers to support patient care and discharge planning. Serve s as an advocate for patients' emotional and psychological needs during their emergency care. Provide s empathetic, culturally competent care to diverse patient populations, recognizing the impact of mental health challenges on individuals from various backgrounds. Participate s in ongoing training related to behavioral health crisis management, de-escalation techniques, and other relevant professional development opportunities. Other information: Required Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in North Carolina and/or compact state Two (2) years of experience working as a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of that experience in behavioral health nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Preferred Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Experience in a psychiatric or emergency department setting. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. National Crisis Interventions Plus (NCI+) or similar de-escalation training. Psychiatric Nursing Certification. Strong knowledge of psychiatric and medical conditions, with the ability to differentiate between the two in an emergency setting.
