Department Overview The main operating room at Children’s Minnesota Minneapolis Hospital includes nine surgical suites and one procedure room. Children’s surgery centers are the first and only in Minnesota to be verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program. Achieving Level I verification is the highest level of distinction for health systems that perform complex surgical procedures in newborns, children and teens. Key Position Details: 2500 is a 21-bed inpatient oncology nursing unit passionate about the care of oncology and medicine patients. Oncology is a very rewarding place to work as you are caring for patients during their most vulnerable time. Patients can be anywhere on their oncology journey when on our unit. They could be a new diagnosis, receiving radiation or chemotherapy treatment, admitted for cancer related illness, infection or they could be end of life. We have a team of oncologists who support our patients and collaborate with the hospitalist team. The team is close-knit with nurses, physicians, nursing assistants and HUC’s working very hard to provide excellent care to the patients we encounter every day. Nurse patient ratios on day and evening shift are generally 3-4 patients per nurse. On night shift, nurses generally have 4-5 patients per nurse. Assignments are adjusted based on patient acuity. Our team also has nursing assistants on all shifts, a free charge nurse, and a HUC on days/evenings. The orientation process is generally 8-10 weeks, which can be adjusted based on the individual RN’s needs. The first two weeks of orientation are largely classroom and skills based, with the following 6 weeks on the unit with a preceptor. During orientation there are roughly 25 shifts on the floor with a preceptor, online learning modules, classroom teaching by an instructor, and skills days. You will meet every other week with the Patient Care Manager or Supervisor to review how orientation is progressing and address any questions or concerns you have. We are committed to providing a great orientation process and we have awesome preceptors! There is the opportunity for chemotherapy administration training, after successfully completing orientation. New nurses to oncology are generally able to complete chemotherapy training at about 1 year of experience. Experienced oncology nurses are able to complete training after demonstrating safe clinical practice and medication administration practice.
