Main Function: Provides evaluation and treatment to urgent care patients. Description The OB First Assist collaborates with the surgeon and the healthcare team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The OB First Assist must have acquired the necessary knowledge, skill and judgement specific to clinical practice. Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the APP assists Apply principles of asepsis and infection control skillfully Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient, or performs these independently if directed by the surgeon Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed by the surgeon Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques by closely always observing the operative field, demonstrating stamina for sustained retraction and anticipating the needs of the surgeon Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon, sutures the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin, by demonstrating the different types of closure, and correct approximation of tissue layers.
