The Inpatient Pain Nurse Practitioner provides expert, evidence-based care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults experiencing acute, chronic, and complex pain conditions throughout the hospital. The NP is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team that partners closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, intensivists, hospital medicine providers, nurses, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists, psychologists, and palliative care providers to optimize pain management, functional recovery, and patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities: Perform comprehensive assessments, obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, and develop individualized pain management plans for hospitalized patients with acute, chronic, postoperative, and medically complex pain conditions. Manage patients receiving multimodal analgesia, including opioid and non-opioid therapies, ketamine infusions, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), epidural analgesia, peripheral nerve catheters, methadone, and other advanced pain management modalities. Assess and manage patients requiring opioid or sedative weaning following prolonged critical illness or hospitalization. Monitor treatment response, adjust pain management plans, and coordinate ongoing care throughout hospitalization. Provide consultation to inpatient teams regarding pain assessment, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management strategies, and complex analgesic regimens. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and consulting services to develop coordinated plans of care that promote patient comfort, safety, functional recovery, and timely discharge. Participate in daily interdisciplinary rounds and communicate recommendations with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Educate patients, families, nursing staff, trainees, and healthcare providers regarding pain management, medication safety, and individualized treatment plans. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, evidence-based practice projects, research, and program development to advance pediatric pain management.
