Our patient population consists of primarily Advance Heart Failure, Cardiology, and Vascular surgery patients. This unit functions as the stepdown unit for the Ashley River Tower offering a higher level of care for the many specialties in this building. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:1-1:3 based on patient acuity. This highly engaged team is innovative, dynamic, and fast-paced. Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) The CTICU is a 21 bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit specializing in everything Cardiac Surgery. We care for patients post operatively after coronary bypass, valve replacements/repairs, and aortic dissection repairs. We also care for patients after thoracic surgery including esophagectomies, and pneumonectomies. We are the only heart and lung transplant center in the State and are top 5 in the nation for LVAD implantation. We care for patients that have many different methods of mechanical circulatory support i.e. intraortic balloon pumps, impellas, centrimag, and we are the only adult unit that manages VA ECMO. We are the only unit that is specialized and certified in CSU-ALS which is ACLS for post cardiac surgery. Any one of our beds can be used for emergent surgeries and procedures. Given the fast pace, and high acuity we have an extensive orientation process. There are several opportunities for professional growth, with experienced nurses expanding their skills through Rapid Response or ECMO teams, and engaging in leadership through our highly active RSL/CSL roles. The unit Shared Governance is actively contributing to any practice changes and workflow improvements. Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) MSICU is an 18-bed unit that provides care to adult patients covering various medical and surgical patient populations. The various medical diagnoses include multi-system organ failure, hematology/oncology, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, respiratory failure, and post lung transplants. This intensive care unit also has a sub-specialty in digestive disease and cares for patients with renal, endocrine, liver disease, GI surgery and GI hemorrhage, pancreatitis, and islet cell transplants. In addition, MSICU cares for the obstetric patients requiring ICU level of care. Staff are trained in advanced hemodynamic monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, ECMO, pulmonary artery catheters, and aggressive ventilator therapy. The MSICU has earned the Silver Beacon Award. Specialty Medical ICU (SMICU) The Specialty Medical ICU (SMICU) is an 18-bed intensive care unit located on the 5th floor within the historic Main Hospital. The unit cares for a diverse patient population, including those with pulmonary, renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal bleeding, endocrine, overdose, and infectious disease conditions. In the future, the SMICU will also expand its scope to include the care of fresh liver transplant patients. The SMICU serves as the designated Sharing Hope organ donor unit, playing a critical role in the coordination and management of organ donation. The unit is highly praised for its strong focus on teamwork, quality, and patient safety, which are deeply embedded in daily practice. The unit manages a wide range of cardiac procedures, including left and right heart catheterizations—with sheath pulls performed at the bedside—ablations, and pacemaker and defibrillator insertions. This includes, but is not limited to, patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety. Demonstrates competency in nursing skills and the use of patient care/unit equipment as defined by unit/department-specific requisite skills. Prioritizes patient care in an ongoing manner in accordance with Evidence-Based Practice Standards of Care. Practices effective problem identification and resolution. Delegates tasks and duties to healthcare team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the team member’s capabilities and qualifications. Communicates appropriate information regarding patient condition or unit concerns to other healthcare team members. Demonstrates caring practices by providing a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights. Collaborates with the education department and nursing leadership team to effectively transition and support new team members and/or students. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards. Participates in and may lead unit level and/or organizational level committees focused on nursing practice and performance improvement. Participates in departmental and organizational peer review, mentoring, and coaching regarding professional practice or role performance. Practices efficient use of supplies and maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area. Attends staff development in-services, department meetings, and/or nursing committee meetings. Partners with the nursing leadership team to identify professional development needs. Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education. Actively participates in and attends the Nurse Residency Program as appropriate to role. Performs all other duties as assigned.
