Department Overview At Children’s Minnesota PICU in St. Paul Campus, our interdisciplinary team of intensivists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, social workers and case managers are dedicated to the care of children with life-changing critical diagnoses. We specialize in caring for children experiencing acute and chronic neurological and respiratory illnesses, recovery of extensive surgical interventions and severe infections, in addition to failure of one or more body organ systems. The PICU at Children’s St. Paul is a 12-bed unit for critically ill patients and their families. We care for patients along the continuum of acute recovery to provide for their changing physical and emotional needs as we prepare them to return home. Our patient population requires complex care, including hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, maintenance of systemic perfusion and management of organ failure. Our team balances a highly technical skill set with a family-centered approach. Position Summary The Vascular Access Registered Nurse provides expert peripheral intravenous (PIV), PICC line placements and other vascular access related tasks. This includes developing (as needed) and maintaining clinical expertise in the placement of PICC lines, teaching and mentoring RN's on the floors about basic IV care such as the use of safety catheters, being a clinical expert resource for the organization in vascular access issues and working closely with the staff to improve organizational access, flow and customer experience and assisting in the development of this new program. * Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. * Current MN nursing license. * BLS certification. * Current 2-3 years of pediatric nursing experience. * Current 2 years expertise in vascular access with children. * Competent in assessment and treatment of VAD sites for all complications. * Proficiency in ultrasound guided PIV placement, 1 year experience required. * Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement experience in children required * VA-BC certification preferred. * An informational meeting with the Patient Care Manager is required prior to awarding the position. As a member of the largest pediatric heart program in the state, our team works closely with more than 200 interdisciplinary professionals dedicated to the care of children with life-changing cardiovascular diagnoses. In this unit, we care for patients along their continuum of acute recovery to provide for their changing physical and emotional needs as we prepare them to return home. We specialize in caring for children experiencing heart failure, after repair of congenital heart defects and heart catheterization, and before and after transplant. We routinely utilize extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and ventricular assist devices (VAD) in the care we provide. Our patient population requires hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, maintenance of systemic perfusion, and management of organ failure. Works with resident and/or responsible party through collaboration, education, and timely communication to ensure appropriate service and placement.
