The patient population is comprised of acutely ill surgical patients requiring a higher level of nursing care and monitoring. This unit primarily cares for post-op patients admitted to the Abdominal Transplant, Hepatobiliary Surgery, ENT/Plastics Surgery and Ortho-micro Surgery teams. Secondary, this unit manages critical care needs for patients admitted to the Trauma/ACCS/Geriatric Trauma Surgery teams, Orthopedic-Spine/Recon/Hand etc. teams as well as Vascular Surgery and other overflow teams. Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose The Graduate Nurse provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care after completing a nursing program and before licensure. Will be required to obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation from an accredited school of nursing to remain employed in a HSO in the state of Missouri. Responsibilities Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration. Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs. Additional Information About the Role The General Surgery floor and intermediate care unit is located on north campus in the Schoenberg Pavilion and is a bariatric center of excellence. The nurses care for patients who undergo innovative surgeries including plastic reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, endocrine oncology, and ophthalmology. The intermediate care unit provides monitoring of adult surgical patients that do not meet criteria for ICU but require a higher level of care such as continuous cardiac monitoring, frequent I & O, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, initiation of CPAP/BIPAP, frequent vital signs, and intravenous medication management of approved medications.
