In the general care area, 45 rooms are fully equipped with critical care monitoring capabilities. The six trauma/resuscitation suites are immediately adjacent to the ambulance bay. With the leadership of the Manager and the Clinical Supervisor, the Nursing Support Assistant (CNA) performs assigned supportive work in connection with the delivery of patient care, including functional tasks and skills. The University of Chicago Medicine is designated as a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, meaning the hospital is prepared to handle the most seriously injured trauma patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This unit is a high acuity, fast-paced hematology oncology unit, which is looking for a NSA with attention to detail, effective communication, and ability to multi-task. Prefers 6 months of nursing assistant experience, but willing to hire new graduates from an accredited NSA program. Unit offers self-scheduling, opportunities to work with multi-disciplinary teams, and a friendly culture. Performs activities which support the daily functions and operations of a patient care unit and the healthcare team. Provides constant observation and documentation of activity of assigned patient. Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the assigned area. This can include preoperative assessment and sedation, administration and management of an anesthetic, and discontinuation of the anesthetic and postoperative management. Essential Job Functions Acquires anesthesia drugs from the satellite pharmacy, prepares anesthesia drugs and delivery system. Functions as a member of the Care Team to carry out the plan for each patient and the Care Center. Performs preoperative assessment of the patient, which includes chart review, preop patient interview, history and physical if necessary, and establishes an anesthesia plan based on findings and discussion with the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist. Demonstrates an expert proficiency in airway management, which includes mask ventilation, laryngeal mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation. Demonstrates proficiency in the management and/or placement of current monitoring techniques and procedures in the perioperative period which include but are not limited to: ECG placement and interpretation, arterial line placement, central line catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, transesophegeal echocardiography, peripheral nerve stimulator's. Records all pertinent perioperative events on the patient’s chart and anesthesia record. Transports patients postoperatively to an appropriate location based on anesthetic technique and patient’s condition, and reports the patient’s condition and anesthetic concerns to the appropriate clinician. In collaboration with the attending anesthesiologist, the CRNA will demonstrate proficiency in the management of the induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia. Job Description Join The University of Chicago Medicine, as a Critical Care Outreach Nurse in the PICU Department . Eligible for a Sign on Bonus up to $6,000! The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago is a state-of-the-art facility, with 20 general PICU beds and 10 beds designated for cardiac intensive care patients. The PICU team directs the care of these critically ill children together with consulting services from across the hospital, including both medical and surgical subspecialties (pediatric surgery, cardiac surgery, trauma surgery, ENT, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery). The Pediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse provides an advanced level of care to critical patients throughout the Medical Center with 24/7 coverage. Candidates who succeed in this position have critical care expertise from an intensive care unit and/or emergency department, and are confident and comfortable triaging multiple, complex priorities, all while delivering exceptional care and communication. The CCON responds to all Rapid Response Team pages and ward cardiac arrest calls and demonstrates an ability to assess and recognize a deteriorating patient condition, communicate with the interdisciplinary team, implement interventions, and provides assistance and support to the patient’s primary nurse to meet the emergent potential need of the patient. Additionally, the Pediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse assists and accompanies patient transfers to higher level of care or diagnostic testing requiring an RN. They maintain accurate documentation on the Rapid Response Team, cardiac arrests, activation of stroke team. They also participate in reviews and collating data from Rapid Response Team calls and cardiac arrests, report this data to Center for Quality, and improve the experience of critically ill patients throughout the inpatient areas, establishing optimal levels of care and improved outcomes.
