The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides care for children with life-threatening illnesses as well as those who are at serious risk for life threatening complications. We care for children from birth to 21 years of age. Patients treated here are experiencing multi-organ system failure, acute and chronic pulmonary conditions, meningitis, septic shock, near drowning, diabetic ketoacidosis, renal and/or hepatic failure, oncology/bone marrow transplant or airway management, among other needs. Major diagnostic categories include respiratory, neurologic, injury/poisoning, trauma, oncologic and infectious disease. The PICU also provides care for patients receiving solid organ transplant as well as neurosurgical, burn, orthopedic, ENT and general pediatric surgical patients. Patients in the PICU are cared for by a multidisciplinary team including pediatric intensivists, RNs and dedicated PICU respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers and child life specialists. We provide family-centered care by identifying and addressing the needs of the patient and family throughout their hospitalization. Our esteemed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit recently received the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the AACN (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses) ! There are only 15 PICUs in the nation with this designation, and our hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus is the only PICU in Colorado that has received this award. Minimum Qualifications Degrees BSN and Master’s Degree NNP or Bachelor’s Degree and MPAS or MS-PA Experience Two years in an advanced practice provider role.
