SUMMARY Provides direct nursing care to clients during the surgical abortion procedure and for recovery care for post-surgical abortion period. The RN works in partnership with the Health Center Team to provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Participates as a member of a team providing confidential, quality patient services, allowing patients to maintain a sense of dignity, trust and safety. Follows PPFA and the organization’s protocols, policies and procedures and any center-specific policies and procedures. May perform blood draws, TB testing, injections, including vaccines, basic ultrasonography for gestational dating after completion of ultrasound training and under the direction of the physician. Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician. DIRECT RESPONSIBILITIES Recovery Room • Monitor patients in recovery room, including taking vital signs, dispensing medication, giving verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post abortion complications to the MD on duty. Informs client of need for post-abortion follow-up. • Maintains client statistics to be given to on-call staff. • Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room. • Completes appropriate cleanup of the recovery room at the end of each clinic including but not limited to locking up medications, cleaning recliners, emptying trash. Job Summary The CNM hired for this position will work variable shifts at Troy Hospital and William Beaumont University Hospital. Shifts are primarily 12 hours and will be assigned in the OB Emergency Department at both hospitals and Labor & Delivery (WBUH only). Shifts will primarily be midnights, other shifts as need, and will include weekends. The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)-II is an advanced practice nurse who provides full scope midwifery care. The CNM provides care to the patient which is delivered during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. The CNM also provides care to the gynecologic patient in the clinic/office setting. High risk patients are cared for in consultation and collaboration with the medical team. The practice setting for the CNM-II will be in the Outpatient Clinic, contractually with Obstetrician's offices, the Natural Birth Center, the Family Birth Center Triage and LDRs and the Post Partum unit with the focus on enhancement of clinical care, patient satisfaction, and safety. Clinical care may include first assisting in OB surgical cases. Essential Functions Clinical Practice: The CNM provides clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the CNM. Performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. Formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and inter-conceptional care as defined by midwifery scope of practice. Communication/Consultation: Role models advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators and others and promotes patient and family centered care. Provides continuity, compassionate, culturally sensitive care to patients, and models this for students and colleagues.
