Position Title Registered Nurse, Surgical Oncology Job Description Summary The 8B Surgical Oncology Unit at VHC Health is a dynamic, fast-paced environment dedicated to providing exceptional care for adult oncology patients. Opened in December 2024, this 24-bed unit represents an exciting and innovative service line where nurses play a key role in shaping the future of surgical oncology care. RNs typically care for 4–5 patients per shift, delivering comprehensive, hands-on care that includes ostomy management, PICC lines, TPN, blood product administration, and complex post-surgical recovery. Each day begins with bedside shift report to ensure clear communication and an enhanced patient experience, followed by head-to-toe assessments, medication administration in EPIC, and close collaboration with hospitalists, social workers, and Virtual RNs to streamline admissions and discharges. The unit is proud of its recent Commission on Cancer re-designation and its forward-thinking approach, incorporating new technologies and care models such as Virtual RNs and advanced infusion and feeding systems. Job Objectives : Assume direct responsibility and accountability for, and authority of, the nursing care of all patients assigned. Responsibilities Assesses and identifies the patient's physiological and psycho-social problems and needs. Develops an individualized plan of nursing care for each patient in which goals, in terms of measurable outcomes, are stated. Ensures that nursing care plan is consistent with the medical plan and adheres to accepted current standards of care and practice. Makes appropriate assignments to team members by utilizing patient acuity data, and maintains accountability for members under his/her direction. Ensures nursing care adheres to current hospital/departmental policies, procedures, and regulations. Demonstrates principles of infection control and collaborates with infection control nurse to ensure safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Participates in the orientation of new personnel. Assists clinical instructors in providing learning experiences for nursing students. Documents review and/or revision of each assigned patient's plan of care at least every 24 hours. Drug Administration Functions: Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician. Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication/treatment. Ensure that prescribed medication for one resident is not administered to another. Ensure that an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment is on hand to meet the nursing needs of the residents. Report needs to the Nurse Supervisor. Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary, and in accordance with established policies. Ensure that narcotic records are accurate for your shift. Notify the Nurse Supervisor of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift. Review medication cards for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician's order, and adherence to stop order policies. Notify the attending physician of automatic stop orders prior to the last dosage being administered. Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required, and in accordance with established procedures Personnel Functions: Participate in employee performance evaluations, determining your shift's staffing requirements, and making recommendations to the Nurse Supervisor concerning employee dismissals, transfers, etc. Inform the Nurse Supervisor of staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work.
