Summary This position has basic medical/surgical knowledge in order to care for general surgical, vascular, thoracic, gastrointestinal, and orthopedic surgical patients, which may include surgical step-down patient population. Employees who are in the casual position are required to pick up shifts as outlined in the Midland Nursing Casual Employee Policy. Responsibilities (30%) * Regularly assesses patients/clients needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care, and accepted standards of nursing practice. (30%) * Provides direct patient care, including medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc. (20%) * Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care. (10%) * Processes physician/provider orders and performs physician ordered care accurately, completely and in a timely manner. (10%) * Follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Demonstrates understanding of clinical pathways and utilizes appropriately. Remains calm and efficient when working in stressful situations. Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data. STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE The ANA Standards of Professional Performance (2015) describe a competent level of behavior in the professional role, including activities related to: ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice professional practice evaluation, resource utilization and environmental health. The RN is expected to engage in professional role activities, including leadership, appropriate to their education and position. The RN is accountable to for their professional actions to themselves, their healthcare consumers, their peers and ultimately to society. Ethics: The RN practices ethically. Qualifications EDUCATION Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. All newly hired registered nurses must have current BCLS certification or must obtain within one month of hire. EXPERIENCE Registered Nurse is the foundational job description for all RNs. All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program. LICENSURE Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end of life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day. Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting.
