Description

The Nurse Manager I is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service.  This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical records, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements. 

The Nurse Manager I collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care. He or she works closely with the Nursing Clinical Director, Physician Leader and staff in insuring that the Service/Unit maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization.


Responsibilities

A. Clinical/Technical/Service 

  1. Responsible to the Nursing Supervisor of the given division
  2. Functions in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, the current Federal and State Regulations governing the use and dispensing of methadone, the guidelines for patient care set by the Program’s Administration and the philosophy of the Patient Care Services Department of the hospital
  3. Maintains standards of nursing care and practice by supervising and evaluating nursing personnel
  4. Plans, directs, coordinates, evaluates and facilitates the delivery of nursing care through the creative utilization of professional nursing expertise
  5. Recognizes patient’s problems and participates in their resolution
  6. Contributes toward the maintenance of a professional setting that allows for growth and development of patients and staff
  7. Participates in formulating, interpreting, and implementing nursing service programs
  8. Periodically reviews with nursing staff the maintenance of complete and accurate patient-care and narcotic records
  9. Participates in the orientation and evaluation of new nursing staff
  10. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

  4. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with the regulations of New York State Department of Health and the Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations
  5. Interprets the hospitals nursing policy and standards relative to patient care in clinics
  6. Oversees the assignment/delegation of nursing functions and responsibilities in assigned clinics in the absence of the Head/Charge Nurse
  7. Supervises and evaluates nursing staff performance with the Charge Nurse and Nursing Supervisor
  8. Assists the Division Nursing Supervisor in monitoring nursing staff attendance and adherence to program policies
  9. Participates in counseling and disciplining of staff, when appropriate
  10. Monitors all security aspects of the medication process
  11. Reviews patient and narcotic records in a timely manner
  12. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies in the clinic(s)
  13. Interviews prospective employees and collaborates with the Division Nursing Supervisor in evaluating their personal attributes and professional qualifications

C. Educational/Professional Development

  1. Participates in the development of other staff members
  2. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements
  3. Identifies learning strengths and needs
  4. Utilizes learning resources
  5. Participates in the hospitals Continuous Quality Improvement Program and maintains Standards of Care
  6. Makes recommendations regarding standards of patient care and policies for the Patient Care Services Department and appropriate support services
  7. Demonstrates willingness to evaluate own nursing practice
  8. Keeps abreast of current nursing literature
  9. Avails self of continuing education programs/professional conferences/seminars/workshops
  10. Keeps abreast of legal and political issues related to health care and nursing
  11. Counsels staff with regard to pursuing on-going formal education
  12. Encourages staff attendance at in-service and Continuing Education programs
  13. Provides learning experiences for nursing personnel on an individual basis
  14. Acts as a role model to nursing staff

D. Communication/Relationships

  1. Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others
  2. Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community
  3. Acts as a resource person for staff with regard to Program and Nursing policies and procedures
  4. Interprets the role of the nurse to the patient, to other clinic staff and to the community
  5. Demonstrates good interpersonal relationships
  6. Demonstrates skills in communication on both oral and written levels
  7. Works cooperatively with the Unit Director and the Unit Supervisor in Administrative matters
  8. May be required to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education Requirements

Bachelors of Science with a major in nursing is required

Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare-related field, or be enrolled in a program, preferred

Experience Requirements

3-5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience demonstrating solid management abilities.

Proven clinical and nursing administrative expertise in the assigned nursing practice area.

Critical thinking and organizational skills are essential.

Must possess relevant clinical expertise in the specialized field.

Licensing and Certification Requirements (if applicable)

Licensed as a registered nurse, Issuing Agency: Department of Health/Office of Professions in the state of New York.

Child abuse certification is required

Infection control certification is required

Basic Life Support (BLS) Issuing Agency: AHA is required

Job Description Job Function: 01. Utilizes nursing assessment skills effectively. Coordinates and completes patient assessment. Consistently assesses pain, using the appropriate scale, intervention, and reassessment tool. Monitors effects of medications and reports adverse effects. Assesses potential discharge needs. Assesses barriers to learning and functional status of patient. Age Specific Competencies: Encourages patients to report pain and to communicate concerns regarding pain management. Anticipate patient may focus on time constraints and concerns impacting lifestyle, family, work, and/or income loss due to treatment. Job Function: 02. Demonstrates competent clinical skills. Demonstrates knowledge and skill of equipment and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of medication administration and safety according to hospital policy. Identifies and reports all risk management issues. Demonstrates competency for chemotherapy/infusion administration. Demonstrates knowledge/ adherence to Blood Administration. Age Specific Competencies: Aware of special considerations based on distinguishing characteristics of age groups. (ex. elder adults may have unpredictable absorption medications and require close monitoring) Job Function: 03. Maintains complete and accurate documentation. Completes required documentation in accordance with hospital policy. Patient’ s plan of care is complete and documented in a timely manner. Patient and family response to treatment plan and nursing interventions is documented. Documents changes in patient condition. Verifies MD orders and daily charges. Documents telephone orders in accordance with policies. Assess emotional distress daily and report 4 or higher scores to SW. Completes PHQ questionnaire for depression screening and refer to social worker for score of 3 or higher. Age Specific Competencies: Aware of and follows the organizations policy regarding the reporting of suspected elder abuse and domestic violence and depression Job Function: 04. Assumes responsibility for directing patient care. Delegates tasks to the appropriate team member. Carries out physician orders in an accurate manner. Coordinate tests/procedures. Prioritize based on changes in patient s condition. Coordinates and implements patient/family teaching. Collaborates with other disciplines such as pharmacy, social work, dietary. Age Specific Competencies: Identifies psychosocial issues. Makes timely referrals to social workers. Job Function: 05. Demonstrates professional practice responsibilities. Completes annual clinical competencies as required on unit. Demonstrates ability to prioritize care, and problem solve to meet the changing needs of patient. Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures. Functions as a resource/mentor to staff members. Identifies knowledge/skill gaps and takes action in obtaining education and/or training. Attends meetings and keeps current with changes in profession and unit function/activities. Participates in hospital and/or unit-based committees. Job Function: 06. Patient Satisfaction. Age Specific Competencies: Assess fall risk. Provides assistance as necessary including step stools with handrails, access to handicapped bathroom, etc. Job Function: 08. Patient Advocate Identifies needs on admission and communicates patient s and family’s needs to physician, social worker, and/or case manager. Relays information regarding plan of care, patient progress, scheduling of tests/procedures to patient and family. Includes patient and surrogate in care planning. Act as conduit of information for patient and family. Job Function: 09. Professional Practice Functions. Demonstrates willingness to float to other departments. Collaborates with physician practices in clinical care and protocols Job Function: 10. Promote Staff Professional Development, develop/coordinate staff competencies, compliance tracking, onboarding of new nurses, Magnet champion, assist with policies/competencies Other Tasks Which May Be Required Physical Requirements: As defined by Occupation Safety/OMS Required Education and/or Experience: NJ RN License BSN preferred Oncology certification preferred Required QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program. Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse. BLS certification. Preferred Bachelor’s degree in nursing. All ASN must complete their BSN studies within five years of their start date. Master’s degree in nursing or related field. 1+ year of experience in Nursing or relevant area.
