Summary

Scrubs in and assists in the OR suite. Obtains all supplies/equipment for specific surgical procedures, sets up and maintains the sterile field.


Job Duties

  • Cares for all patients who enter the OR suite. *
  • Acts in the role of a scrub nurse. *
  • Maintains certifications in all areas within scope of practice (if applicable). *
  • Orients new scrub personnel as needed. *
  • Sets up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedure. *
  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed. *
  • Gowns and gloves, surgeons and assistants. *
  • Helps in draping sterile fields. *
  • Passes instruments to surgeon during procedure appropriately. *
  • Prepares sterile dressings. *
  • Assists in patient transfer to cart at the end of procedure. *
  • Returns soiled instruments to decontamination room for terminal sterilization. *
  • Assists team with cleaning of room. *
  • Assists in the prepping room for the next patient. *
  • Performs responsibilities within the scope of governing organizations and MLHS policies. *

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Surgical Technologists: Prefer Certified Surgical Tech with previous experience working as a surgical tech.
  • (LPN's only) Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Minnesota. Who has operating room scrub tech experience from another facility.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, policies, procedures, and medical ethics equivalent to years of experience.
  • Excellent communication skills at various levels.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Attention to detail, organization, and prioritization.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support.

Follow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN. Maintain the sterile field. Review daily assignments and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia. Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs taking into consideration age, physiological, cultural and physical status. Plan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment and MD preferences. Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more. Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and report and/or correct any breaks. Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification. Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Assist with draping the sterile field. Prepare/edit surgeon's preference lists.
