Job Summary 

Works in collaboration with the surgeon and RN to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Assists with orientation of all surgical techs in the perioperative area. Assists with the implementation of OR policies and procedures. Facilitates safe and effective completion of surgical procedures. Plans and implements direct and indirect care to patients of all ages in the Operating Room. Prepares and maintains aseptic surgical field, assists with procedures performed in surgery, functions in a scrub role and as part of the OR team. Handles instruments according to their instructions for use and follows infection prevention principles. 

Essential Functions

  • Prepares the operating room for surgical cases, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly organized and available by applying principles of Universal Precautions, asepsis, and sterile technique.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques and ensures sterile field integrity during surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates the surgeon’s needs during procedures, efficiently passing instruments and materials as required.
  • Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety.
  • Retains, labels, and documents specimens for pathology accurately, ensuring proper handling and transfer.
  • Assists with patient positioning, draping, and transfer methods to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Cleans, reprocesses, and sterilizes surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency protocols and takes appropriate action in emergency situations.
  • Assists in maintaining and updating physician preference cards to reflect procedural requirements.
  • Contributes to perioperative team efficiency by restocking supplies, returning equipment to storage, and ensuring operating rooms are ready for subsequent cases.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical School certificate course in Surgical Technology required
  • 15 continuing education hours related to the practice of surgical technology must be maintained annually to continue employment. This is tracked within the department by management from documentation provided by the Surgical Technician employee.
  • 1-3 years of operating room surgical technician experience required
  • 1-2 years of lead surgical technician responsibilities preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise in surgical techniques, instrumentation, and sterile processing.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond quickly during procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards, including safety and infection control protocols.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with the perioperative team.
  • Commitment to patient safety and high-quality care.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation within three (3) months of hire and must be maintained required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
