Reports To: Emergency Department Manager / Director of Nursing
Position Summary
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care for individuals presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergent conditions. This role requires critical thinking, rapid decision-making, and the ability to prioritize care while maintaining a high standard of patient safety and compassion.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and triage using established protocols (e.g., ESI)
- Initiate and manage emergency nursing interventions based on patient condition and physician orders
- Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and scope of practice
- Monitor and evaluate patient responses, updating care plans as needed
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care
- Provide rapid response and stabilization for critically ill or injured patients
- Document all patient care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and supplies
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental meetings
- Serve as a patient advocate while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress, fast-paced environments
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively
- Knowledge of emergency nursing standards and best practices
- Proficiency in EMR systems and basic computer skills
- Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and quality care
Education and Experience
- Current, active Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Minimum of 1 year of emergency or acute care experience preferred
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Required or within a specified timeframe
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Required or within a specified timeframe
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – Preferred
- Trauma certification (e.g., TNCC) – Preferred
Work Environment
- Fast-paced Emergency Department with exposure to high-acuity and trauma patients
- Frequent exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and emergency situations
- Requires flexibility, adaptability, and teamwork
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting
- Ability to lift and move patients (up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance)
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity for clinical tasks
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
