School Registered Nurse

$35 - $38 / hour
Summary: The Registered Professional Nurse will provide primary health and emergency care to students and staff. The nurses at SMSD serve as a resource for wellness and health concerns in the school setting.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Uses the nursing process to assess the health needs of students and staff. Including, but not limited to student health care plans, such as help creating and following Individual Educational Plans.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered.
  • Provides care for student and staff illness and accidents including documented notes, results, action plans and communication.
  • Develops and follows individual health care plans and modifications for students with special health care needs.
  • Serves as liaison between the home, medical community, and the school regarding student health concerns.
  • Consult with teachers, school administrators and other school staff regarding student care.
  • Manages mandated school screening programs and school/sports physicals and follow-up.
  • Monitors the school environment and recommends changes to promote health and safety.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate cumulative health records including immunizations.
  • Serves as a member of the building mental health and school safety committee, as needed.
  • Reviews and evaluates own job performance and maintains professional development report self to supervisor should an error need to be documented.
  • Reviews and evaluates school health services. Educates Student and Staff on Health Procedures.
  • Mandated Reporting suspected physical and sexual abuse and neglect, follows communicable disease control procedures and informs administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and readmission.
  • Mange data base systems. Including but not limited to daily monitoring of and data input into student management programs. Ex. Emails, Student Information Systems and Health Care Management Systems.
  • Performs other duties assigned or as required.
Experience/Certifications/Requirements
  • Must have a NYS Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license
  • Must have CPR - Basic Life Saving certification
  • The ability to successfully complete a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) within three years at the ASL proficiency level defined for each job position as determined by SMSD.
  • Knowledge of many areas of health including mental health
  • Knowledge of school laws and policies
  • Ability to work independently or with others
  • Ability to communicate well with others
  • Ability to assess situations and act quickly
  • Knowledge of state health regulations
  • Ability to multitask
NOTE: The school may also require employees in this classification to complete successful training in behavior management programs including but not limited to TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) which will be provided by St. Mary's School for the Deaf.

Erie County Civil Service Job Description for REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSE (SCHOOL): Under current New York State Law, candidates seeking employment with school districts in New York State will be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check prior to appointment. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs professional nursing services at one or more schools in the maintenance of acceptable health standards, school health records and the emergency treatment of student and employee health problems; does related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional nursing position involving responsibility for giving care to students and for performing related nursing services such as pupil health screening and notification of defects and communicable disease control requiring judgment and skills.
